Baseball Sweeps Bates College Behind Strong Pitching

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AUBURNDALE, Fla.—Junior captain Dan Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass.) made a big impact on the mound and with his bat, to lead UMass Boston Baseball to a doubleheader sweep of Bates College.

THE BASICS

Game One: UMass Boston 9, Bates College 0 (7 Innings)

Game Two: UMass Boston 4, Bates College 2 (7 Innings)

(UMass Boston 3-3)

(Bates College 3-5)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Mantoni and freshman Bobby Tramondozzi (Peabody, Mass.) teamed up for a one-hit shutout win in game one, before Mantoni provided the go-ahead RBI single in game two of the doubleheader sweep.

In the first game, UMass Boston used a seven-run top of the fourth inning to blow past the Bobcats for a 9-0 win.

The second game would prove to be far closer, with the two teams tied at 2-2 through 4.5 innings. Mantoni plated Josh Lopez (New Haven, Conn.) with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to give the Beacons the lead and Lionel Danielson (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) added a run-scoring single in the sixth to account for the 4-2 win.

GAME ONE

Danielson and Ray Zincone (West Warwick, R.I.) provided all the offense their pitchers would need, as both players finished with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Junior Anthony Searles (Shelton, Conn.) added his first home run of the year and a pair of runs scored, while Dave Murphy (Plymouth, Mass.) legged out the Beacons first triple of the season.

On the mound, Mantoni and Tramondozzi mowed through the Bates lineup. Mantoni allowed just one hit and walked four over four innings, to earn his first win of the season. Tramondozzi took care of the rest, as the freshman gave up one walk and struck out three over three scoreless innings.

The Beacons used six hits, two errors and a hit by pitch-all with two outs, to blow the game wide open in the top of the fourth. Zincone pushed the lead to 3-0 with a two-run single to right field and Danielson made it 5-0 with his single to left in the next at-bat. Lopez, Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.) and Mantoni all added RBI hits of their own, before the inning was over.

GAME TWO

UMass Boston relied on two more freshmen and a senior in game two, as JT Morin (Wilton, Conn.), Steve Consiglio (Soutbury, Conn.) and Manny Garcia (Boston, Mass.) combined to strike out eight and allow just two runs.

Morin threw 4.1 innings in his first collegiate start and struck out five, while allowing two earned runs. Consiglio came on for Morin and recorded one out, before Garcia came on to pick up his first collegiate win by throwing the final 2.1 innings.

Lopez, Mantoni and Zincone all finished with two hits in the second contest to pace the offense.

The Beacons took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Searles doubled to plate Kyle Boudrias (Medford, Mass.) and then Searles came home on a Luke Nagle (Pembroke, Mass.) RBI single.

After Bates tied the game in the top of the fifth, Mantoni drove in Lopez with an RBI single to give the Beacons a 3-2 lead.

UMass Boston added an insurance run in the sixth, when Danielson drove in Frank Johnson (West Haven, Conn.) with an RBI single.

Bates put two runners on in the top of the seventh inning, but Garcia induced a fly out and struck out the final batter, to secure the doubleheader sweep.
