Box Score GORHAM, Maine – After taking an early 3-0 lead, the second-seeded Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth (25-15) pounded out 12 straight runs over six innings to hand the fourth-seeded Beacons (23-14) a 12-3 loss on day two of the 2015 Little East Conference Tournament Thursday afternoon at USM Baseball Stadium.
The Corsairs would tack on 15 hits, and would take advantage of seven Beacons errors to move the Beacons into the loser's bracket. UMass Boston will now face the fifth-seeded Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. in an elimination game for both teams.
Of the 12 runs scored only seven were earned, as the Beacons struggled to make key plays in the loss. The Corsairs will face the top-seeded Huskies at 9:30 a.m. with the winner of that advancing to the championship game on Saturday. The loser will play at 3:30 p.m. in an elimination game against the winner of the UMass Boston/Eastern Connecticut game.
Corey DeMedeiros led the Corsairs as with a 3-for-5 showing, which included three RBI, three runs scored, a double, and a home run. Austin Chouinard earned the victory for UMD after going seven strong innings, in which he allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits. He would also walk three, and struck out six.
Trevor Bouvier (Salem, N.H.) produced the only real offense for the Beacons as the junior shortstop ripped a two-run shot off the top of the fence in the third inning to make it a 2-0 game. The Beacons would then tack on one more run in the inning on an RBI single by Daniel Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass.).
UMass could have blown the lead wide open in the inning, but managed to strand three runners to keep it at a 3-run affair. They would load the bases in the fourth inning, but would fall just short again of expanding their lead.
It was in the fifth that UMass Dartmouth seized control of the contest, as they jumped out to a 5-3 lead with a four-run inning. They would then score three more in the sixth and seventh innings to blow the game wide open, and would later seal the victory with a one-run eighth to improve to 2-0 in the conference tournament.
Mantoni, who started on the hill for the Beacons, went just 4.2 innings, as the righty was handed his second loss of the season. The Corsairs scored five runs, three earned, on seven hits, but the Northbridge did manage four K's.
The Beacons will look to keep their season alive tomorrow when they take on the Warriors at 12:30 p.m. from the USM Baseball Field.
