SALEM, Mass.—UMass Boston men's tennis (4-10, 3-2 Little East) snapped their 3-match losing streak with a big 7-2 Little East Conference victory over host Salem State University (4-9, 2-3 Little East) Wednesday afternoon at Rockett Arena.
Five different Beacons secured wins in the victory, including sophomore Wyatt Towle (Woburn, Mass.) who earned his first collegiate win in the match. Towle defeated Kevin Lam 7-5, 6-4 at number five singles to earn his first win in his first collegiate season.
Seniors Charles Lai (Boston, Mass.) and Greg Fleming (Harwich Port, Mass.) and sophomore Jack Wang (Suzhou, China) and freshman Austin DeLasse (Shrewsbury, Mass.) each went a perfect 2-0 on the afternoon.
The Beacons took a 2-1 lead after doubles action, thanks to a pair of dominating wins at number one and two singles.
UMass Boston's second doubles pair of Wang and Fleming earned their third win as a pairing this year, with an 8-0 victory at second doubles.
Moments later, Lai and DeLasse dispatched their opponents at number one doubles 8-1.
The Vikings kept the match within striking distance with a win at number three doubles, as Luke Hodgkins and Lam defeated Vlad Leopard (Carnikava, Latvia) and Towle 8-3.
UMass Boston wouldn't be deterred though, as they won the first four singles matches to earn their fourth-straight win over the Vikings.
DeLasse earned the first singles win of the day, as he cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over John Didonato at second singles.
Fleming would make it 4-1, with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Hodgkins at fourth-flight singles.
UMass Boston clinched the victory at third-flight singles, as Wang routed Conner Erickson 6-0, 6-1.
Lai kept the momentum going, as he picked up his team-leading 14th win of the year with a 6-1, 6-1 sweep of Matt Mogren.
Salem State earned their lone singles win at sixth-flight singles, as David Dluznieski defeated Leopard 6-3, 6-4.
Towle completed the Beacons big win with his first collegiate win, as he downed Lam 7-5, 6-4 at fifth-flight singles.
UMass Boston will wrap-up the regular season on Saturday when they host Rhode Island College 1:00 p.m. With a win on Saturday, UMass Boston can clinch the third-seed in next week's Little East Conference Tournament.
