Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – A three-run bottom of the eighth would prove to be the clincher as the host Hawks of Roger Williams University defeated baseball by the final of 6-1 Wednesday afternoon at Paolino Field in a non-conference contest.
With Wednesday's loss, the Beacons have now dropped three straight as they fell under .500 for the first time since late March. For Roger Williams, they improved to 6-15.
In a game that featured five different pitchers for both squads, it was Jimmy Hamilton, who earned the victory for RWU after going two complete innings. Hamilton earned his first win of the year, after allowing one run, unearned, on two hits.
For the Beacons freshman lefty Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.) was handed the loss after going 5.1 innings. The Connecticut native struck out seven and allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits, while only surrendering one walk.
Freshman Josh Lopez (New Haven, Conn.), was the lone Beacon to record multiple hits in Wednesday's loss, as the Beacons combined for six total hits. For the Hawks Bryan Terzian drove in a game-high two runs, and finished with one of the Hawks two doubles, as he went 1-for-5.
Defensively both teams struggled in the non-conference meeting, as they combined for seven errors respectively. The Beacons would strike first in the top of the 3rd, with Lopez scoring on an error.
Roger Williams responded right back in the bottom half of the inning to tie it at 1-1. The Beacons would continue to threaten throughout the contest, but it was RWU who took advantage of their opportunities. UMass would strand a total of 11 runners in the loss.
The Hawks jumped to their first lead of the day after tacking on a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. They would then seal the victory in the eighth, as they put-up three more to earn the victory.
Baseball returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Keene State College for a conference doubleheader, which is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
