Box Score DANBURY, Conn. — With the score tied 6-6 midway through the second quarter, Western Connecticut State University would unload 10 consecutive goals to eventually take a 16-11 Little East Conference win Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Saturday's loss dropped the Beacons overall record to 4-7, 0-3 in the Little East Conference. For the Colonials they improved to 3-9 on the year, 1-2 in conference play.
Even at 4-4 through the first 15 minutes of play, Western Connecticut made it a two-goal game at the 8:08 mark of the second. The Beacons would battle back with Nick Tangherlini (Cohasset, Mass.) scoring two of his three goals in just over a minute.
Despite the quick flurry by the Beacons attack, the Colonials took over, as they fired-off five goals to make it 10-6 before the second quarter could come to a close. After the break, they continued their barrage scoring five more times to put the game almost out of reach.
Even with the huge deficit in front of them, the Beacons never gave up, as they came clawing back scoring the final three goals of the third quarter to make it a seven-goal affair. With 15 minutes left to play, the Beacons saw they had a chance to make a late run
However, the Colonials defense held strong over the final frame, allowing just two goals by UMass Boston, the first by Dom Fichera (Scituate, Mass.), and the second by Tangherlini in the closing seconds of the contest.
On the day, Tangherlini and Noah Ellis (Hingham, Mass.) both led the Beacons attack with three goals and an assist. Fichera put up a pair of scores, while seniors Donny Delpha (Walpole, Mass.) and John Powers (Marshfield, Mass.), proved to be the team's top playmakers with their three assists a-piece.
For the game, Western held a 46-32 advantage in shots, while UMass Boston had a slight edge in ground balls, 34-33. Western's starting keeper Kevin Seery made 14 saves to earn the victory, while junior Craig Frehill (Norwell, Mass.) made 11 saves.
Jesse Beatty led the scoring effort for Western with three goals and three assists, while Nick Foley also scored three goals.
Phil Truong (Quincy, Mass.) led the contest in face-off victories with 18, while Sean LeBlanc (Marshfield, Mass.) and Truong each collected team-high five groundballs.
