Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – Led by Ryan McGoff's (Charlestown, Mass.) game-high five goals, men's lacrosse got their 2015 season off to a great start as they cruised past the Amcats of Anna Maria College by the final of 20-2 Wednesday afternoon at the College of Holy Cross Field.
McGoff anchored the Beacons attack, which saw nine different players' record goals. Newcomer Michael Kennedy (Hudson, Mass.) made an immediate impact in his Beacons debut, as he hung four goals in the non-conference win.
Three-time All-Conference selection Donny Delpha (Walpole, Mass.) finished third on the team with three goals, followed by Matthew Duggan (Weymouth, Mass.), who had a pair in the victory. Delpha now needs six points to reach the 150 career point mark, which would make him just the eighth player in program history to do so.
Nick Weiss (Westfield, Mass.) served as the Beacons top playmaker with his five assists, while Kennedy added four assists for an impressive eight-point showing.
Defensively, the Beacons were dominant from start to finish, as they allowed just 19 successful Anna Maria clears out of 40 attempts. They also forced a combined 30 caused turnovers and held a 41-29 advantage in groundballs.
On the face-off "X" junior Phil Truong (Quincy, Mass.) was a perfect 16-for-16, while Xavier Donaldson (Centerville, Mass.) went 5-for-7 to help the Beacons finish 22-for-26 on the face-off.
Craig Frehill (Norwell, Mass.) registered his first win of the year after making just four saves, three of which came in the second. AJ Collette (West Springfield, Mass.) closed out the final 30 minutes of play, and made four saves of-his-own in the win.
Sean LeBlanc (Marshfield, Mass.) had a huge game for UMass in the defensive third, totaling six groundballs, while also forcing three turnovers. Thomas Vanacore (North Branford, Conn.), also solidified the Beacons defense with his four caused turnovers and four groundballs.
It took just a minute and 31 seconds for the Beacons to net their first goal of the new season. Kennedy fired home a shot to the near post off of a Weiss assist to spark what would be seven straight goals by the Beacons. Zac Medeiros (East Freetown, Mass.), along with McGoff, Delpha, Noah Ellis (Hingham, Mass.), and Joe Johnson (Roxbury, Mass.) each got in on the action in the opening frame.
After an Amcats goal to start the second, the Beacons attack would run away with the lead as they tallied the next 13 goals over the final 40:04. Kennedy posted three straight goals in the final six minutes of the second, while in the third and fourth quarters, six different players added to the Beacons lead.
Tyler Hagan scored the second and final goal for the Amcats, who managed just 15 shots in their first loss of the year. Joseph Morris did what he could, with just a total of 14 players able to compete in Wednesday's contest. The netminder made a career-high 16 saves to start off his junior season.
The Beacons return to action on Saturday when they travel to Manhattanville College for a 1 p.m. non-conference game.
