Box Score

DANBURY, Conn. - Freshman Mohamed Kenawy (Revere, Mass.) assisted on the game's first goal and then scored three of his own to help men's soccer to a 5-4 win over Little East Conference rival Western Connecticut State University Friday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.

UMass Boston (12-2-0, 4-1-0 Little East Conference)
Western Connecticut State U. (4-7-2, 0-4-1 Little East Conference)

HOW IT HAPPENED

After 10 minutes of scoreless play, UMass Boston got on the board first to take a 1-0 lead.  Sophomore Newton Jordao (Minas Gerais, Brazil) attacked wide on the left side of the Western defense with the ball, but handed the ball off to Kenawy.  Kenawy threaded a pass through the Western defense to senior Elton Teixeira (Fogo, Cape Verde) on the right side, just outside the post.  Teixeira shot quickly, beating the Western keeper to the right side of the goal to give the Beacons the lead.

Ten minutes later, Teixeira returned the favor, assisting on a goal by Kenawy, pushing the UMass Boston lead to 2-0.

At the 26:34 mark, freshman Chauncey Allers gave the home crowd something to cheer for when he worked the ball around two UMass Boston defenders on the right side of the box and drilled a low shot that caromed off the left post and into the goal to trim the UMass Boston lead to 2-1.

Less than two minutes, Pedro Dasilva (Fogo, Cape Verde), recovered the rebound from his own shot and beat the Western keeper to extend the UMass Boston lead to 3-1.

With four minutes remaining in the half, Western narrowed the margin to 3-2 when Vigan Pacuku took a pass from Robert Della Penna and delivered a low shot past the diving UMass Boston keeper.

In the final minute of the half after a UMass Boston foul, Aislan Sartori curled a direct kick just over the hands of the UMB keeper to even the score at 3-3.

At intermission, the score remained tied.

Western broke the tie in the ninth minute of the second half when Pacuku scored his second goal of the game off a pass from Shane Pugliese to put the Colonials in the lead 4-3.

At the 78:15 mark of the second half, Kenawy beat two Western defenders on the right side of the box and then caromed a shot off the inside of the left post to tie the score at 4-4.

Four minutes later, Kenawy dribbled the ball through three Western defenders on the left side of the box and beat the Western keeper with another cross-cage blast to put the Beacons back in the lead 5-4.
