Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.--#7/8 Babson College (14-2-2, 9-1-1 ECAC East) rushed out to a 4-0 lead just under 28 minutes into the contest and held off #10 UMass Boston Men's Hockey (14-3-1, 9-2-0 ECAC East) 4-2 Friday night at the Babson Skating Center.
The Beavers scored three goals in under five minutes early in the second period to grab a 4-0 lead and junior netminder Jamie Murray stopped 39 shots to help the Beavers take over second place in the ECAC East.
Freshman Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) and senior Stephen Buco (North Providence, R.I.) accounted for the Beacons' two tallies in the loss, as UMass Boston's winless streak against the Beavers stretched to six (0-5-1).
Junior goalies Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) and Zach Andrews (Coral Springs, Fla.) combined for 30 saves in the loss. Faust who relieved Andrews after the Beavers' third goal, stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced, over the final 33 minutes.
Sophomore Bill Seligman led the Beavers with a pair of tallies to help Babson improve to 41-13-6 all-time against the Beacons. Michael Phillips and Max Franklin also chipped in with a goal apiece for the Beavers.
Seligman opened the scoring at 9:41 on the first power-play chance of the game for either side. The sophomore forward tipped a Joe DiPietro shot from the point past Andrews, as the junior goalie never saw it.
Senior captain Mike Kuhn (Holbrook, Mass.) had the best of several great chances for the Beacons to tie the game before the intermission, when he collected his own rebound and sent a shot just wide of the net while falling, with Murray on his backside.
Kuhn netted the equalizer 77 seconds into the second period, only to have the referess blow the play dead for a Beacons' penalty. The senior slipped a wrap-around inside the near post with a defender diving in front of him, but the referees blew the play dead with Murray underneath of Larkin who was charged with goaltender interference.
The penalty would prove costly, as Phillips added Babson's second power power-play tally of the night at 2:39 of the secod period. Moments after Andrews made a tremendous point-blank save, Phillips wristed home a shot from just inside the blue line off a Babson face-off win.
After a pair of great chances on the other end, Seligman picked up his second goal of the day when Andrews couldn't handle Seligman's shot from just inside the blue line, as it went off the top of Andrews' glove and fell behind the junior netminder for a 3-0 Babson lead.
Things wouldn't get much better for the Beacons with Faust in net, as the junior was beaten on a tremendous back-hand effort from Franklin less than three minutes later.
UMass Boston answered back less than 30 seconds after the Franklin goal, when freshman Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) netted a backhand goal of his own to cut the deficit to 4-1 with 12 minutes to play in the second. Kuhn was credited with an assist on the play.
The Beacons nearly cut the deficit in half on Babson's third power-play chance of the game, but Albee Daley (Averill Park, N.Y.) was tripped up by an on-rushing Murray, and McStravick's bid with Murray out of the net was tipped away by Babson defender Mike Vollmin.
Babson began to take control of the possession and shots late in the third period and nearly made it 5-1 heading into the break, but their last-second shot found the back of the net just a few tenths of a second after the horn sounded.
UMass Boston kept their hopes of a comeback alive with their second marker of the night just 5:53 into the third period. Matt Lemire (Townsend, Mass.) won an offensive zone face-off across to Buco in between the circles, and the nation's leading point-scorer blasted a shot over Murray's right shoulder to make it 4-2.
The Beacons had several chances to make it a one-goal game, but the Beacons' power-play came up empty on a pair of third period power-plays. Junior Peter MacIntyre (Norfolk, Mass.) had the best look late in the period, but Murray fought-off MacIntyre's shot from between the circles.
A late Buco penalty forced the Beacons back on the penalty-kill with 2:10 to play and UMass Boston couldn't generate any offense, even after pulling Faust with 40 seconds to play.
After UMass Boston got Buco back with under a minute to play, the two teams got into it behind the Babson net, with several players getting tangled up-leading to 34 minutes of penalties in the final 10 seconds alone.
On the night, UMass Boston outshot Babson 41-34, thanks to a 12-6 advantage in the third period. Babson finished 2-for-4 on the power-play though, while UMass Boston ended the night 0-for-4.
The #10 Beacons and #7/8 Beavers will return to action Saturday at 4 pm at the Beacons Ice Arena, when the two teams finish off the season series.
