Men's Soccer Blanks UMass Dartmouth in Conference Play

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – In the most dominating conference win in program history, men's soccer unloaded six goals in the second half as they cruised to a 7-0 win over UMass Dartmouth, Saturday afternoon at Clark Athletic Center Field.

The seven goals, stands as the most ever scored by a Beacons (6-3-0, 2-0-0 Little East) team against a Little East Conference opponent.  Saturday's win also extends the Beacons win-streak to five matches, making it the longest since the 1999 season.  The 2-0 start to UMass' conference schedule is the program's best start since 1992 when they went 3-0-1.

Four different players recorded at-least one marker in the one-sided victory, while Edmilson Barros (Praia, Cape Verde) and Rolando Barbosa (Fogo, Cape Verde) each picked-up a pair of assists.  For the third time in the last five games, Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.) registered a shutout, but this time the junior did not have to make a single stop in 90 minutes of play.

The Beacons shutout was highlighted by a 28-3 advantage in shots, 16-0 in shots on goal.  UMass also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

After going into the halftime break with a narrow 1-0 lead thanks in part to Elton Teixeira (Boston, Mass.), the Beacons got going early in the second half registered a goal in the first three minutes.  The first came from Pedro Dasilva (Fogo, Cape Verde), on a penalty kick, while the second was recorded by senior Douglas Silveira (Revere, Mass.).

Minutes later, the Corsairs (3-4-1, 0-1-1 Little East) were dealt a major blow following a red card ejection to make it 11 versus 10 for the remainder of the contest.  The Beacons wasted little time taking advantage of the Corsair card scoring their fourth goal less than a minute after it was pulled out.  Dasilva capped off one of the best weeks in recent memory with his second goal of the day and sixth of the week in the 53rd minute.

Luis Mattos (Sete Lagoas, Brazil) came-off the bench and immediately made in an impact scoring his first collegiate goal six minutes later to make it 5-0.  Mattos was not finished as he also earned his first multi-goal performance of his young career scoring in the 64th minute.

The final nail was hammered home by Teixeira, off of a Silveira assist, in the 65th minute of the contest.

UMass would use a majority of their bench for the remainder of the contest, with their defense playing extremely well.  During their five-game hot-streak the Beacons defense has allowed just three goals, none by a conference opponent.  The offense has totaled 23 goals making it one of the most impressive runs in the program's long history.

Men's Soccer returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Bridgewater State University for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game.
