Men's Soccer Unloads Six Goals in Non-Conference Victory

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – Six different players each recorded a goal as men's soccer (3-3-) cruised to a 6-0 victory over Salem State University (0-5-0) Wednesday afternoon at Clark Athletic Center Field in the home debut for the Beacons.

UMass' six goal performance marks the second-best home debut for head coach Jake Beverlin in his two seasons at UMass Boston.  In his first match on his home pitch, Beverlin's squad unloaded seven goals in the 7-0 rout of Emmanuel College.

Of the six goal scorers, four players recorded their first collegiate markers with the Beacons.  Senior Rolando Barbosa (Fogo, Cape Verde) totaled a team-best four points in the victory scoring UMass' third goal, while also tallying a pair of assists.

Pedro Dasilva (Fogo, Cape Verde) broke the scoreless draw less than nine minutes into the contest, as he recorded his second game-winning marker in the last two contests.  Barbosa earned the assist after playing a perfectly crossed ball to Dasilva's foot on the far side of the goal.  Less than five minutes later, senior Douglas Silveira (Revere, Mass.) pushed UMass' lead to two off of another pass from Barbosa.

The two early scores would hold true for the remainder of the first half, as the Beacons defense completely neutralized the Vikings offense.  Junior goalkeeper Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.) did not have to register a save in the first half as he improved to 2-2 on the season.

After the break, the Beacons continued to pressure Salem State.  Less than two minutes in, they extended their lead to three with Barbosa getting in on the scoring action.  Edmilson Barros (Praia, Cape Verde) assisted on the play after sending another well-timed cross into the box.

It would take almost 40 minutes before the Beacons struck again, and when they did they managed three goals in a five minute span.  Juan Nieto (Lara, Venezuela) earned his first collegiate tally on a penalty kick goal in the 81st minute.  From there Fernando Martinez (Madrid, Spain) made it 5-0 off of a Lenir Lima (Mindelo, Cape Verde) pass that he pushed home to the near post.

On the final score of the afternoon, freshman Giovanni Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) fired a shot off the far post, which then deflected in to secure the victory for the Beacons.

Also earning his first appearance in goal for the Beacons was junior Estive Sosa (Chelsea, Mass.).  The 5'11" goalkeeper did not have to make a single save in the second half as the Beacons defense remained a solid wall for the remainder of the contest.

In total the Vikings were held to a season-low one shot, which was not directed on goal.  The Beacons offense fired off a total of 31 shots in the win, 14 of which were on target.  Nondas Kargakis made six saves in the loss (0-5-0).

The Beacons return to action on Saturday when they travel to the University of Southern Maine for a 12 p.m. Little East Conference match.
