Box Score FITCHBURG, Mass. – With two minutes and six seconds remaining in the second overtime, junior Pedro Dasilva (Fogo, Cape Verde) scored the biggest goal of his career to give men's soccer a 2-1 win over Fitchburg State University, Thursday evening at Elliot Field.
Thursday's victory ended a two-game skid for the Beacons and improved their overall record to 2-3. The Falcons fell to 1-3 with the loss, and have now dropped four of their last five meetings with the Beacons.
Fitchburg nearly won the contest in the opening minute of the second overtime, as they rattled a shot off of the crossbar. Luckily for the Beacons they caught a good bounce off of the metal, allowing the match to continue. The Falcons would own the first four shots of the second OT, but it was UMass who put the first shot of the period on goal.
Edmilson Barros (Fogo, Cape Verde), who netted the Beacons first goal of the match nearly earned his second of the contest, but it was stopped by Falcon goalkeeper Aidan Hanratty. Neither team would register a shot for the next four minutes.
With time quickly winding down, the Beacons got the biggest break of the season when the ball landed on the foot of Dasilva. He then drove it past Hanratty to give the Beacons the hard fought victory.
Barros' goal came in the opening minutes of the non-conference match, and marked the second of the year for the sophomore. UMass nearly made it a two-goal game, when a shot from Douglas Silveira (Revere, Mass.) was deflected out by a sprawling Hanratty.
The Beacons lone goal would remain the only score until the 83rd minute, when Zachary Young tied it at 1-1, forcing the OT.
The non-conference showdown was just that as the two teams fired off a combined 50 shots respectively. UMass held a 28-22 advantage in the shots category, and also led the contest 6-4 in corner kicks.
Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.) earned his first win of the season after making four stops. Hanratty totaled nine saves in the loss, his third of the year.
The Beacons return to action next Wednesday when they make their home debut against Salem State University at 3:30 p.m.
