Lacrosse Blows Past Nichols for Non-Conference Win

Box Score

DUDLEY, Mass. – A total team effort pushed men's lacrosse (5-4) to their second straight non-conference win as they defeated Nichols College (2-5) by the final score of 14-5 Wednesday afternoon at Michael J. Vendetti Field.

The Beacons used a balanced attack throughout the victory scoring five goals in the first two quarters, before firing off nine over the final 30 minutes of play.  UMass went on to outshot the host Bison 47-24.

John Powers (Marshfield, Mass.) once again fueled UMass Boston scoring three goals, while picking-up a pair of assists.  Tommy Petitti (Quincy, Mass.) also walked away with three goals and had one helper in the win.

Defensively, Craig Frehill (Norwell, Mass.) anchored UMass Boston as he made four saves, while only allowing a mere three goals to earn his fifth win of the year.  The backline completely dominated the first half as they allowed just six Bison shots, with one of those coming in the first quarter.  They also forced a season-high 22 turnovers, and forced a combined 33 Nichols change of possessions.

On the face-off "X" Xavier Donaldson (Centerville, Mass.) finished 9-for-15, while Phil Truong (Quincy, Mass.) also earned three wins.

Nichols started off the afternoon with the game's first goal less than four minutes in to the first to take an early 1-0 lead.  However, two minutes later the Beacons unleashed a barrage of shots and scored four straight to go-up 4-1 over Nichols.

The Bison would record one more goal before the half, with Dom Fichera (Scituate, Mass.) picking-up his first goal of the day with just over a minute to play before the break.

After the intermission, UMass continued to roll scoring six straight, including a pair of man-up goals to extend their lead to eight (10-2).  Nichols ended the Beacons scoring streak with a late goal in the third.

UMass would start off the fourth scoring four straight before Nichols netted a pair to close out Tuesday's contest.

Lacrosse returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Salem State University for a 1 p.m. Little East Conference contest.
