BOSTON, Mass.--#6/7 UMass Boston extended their program-best start to 10-0-0 Saturday afternoon with a 5-1 victory over visiting University of Southern Maine (1-8-0, 0-7-0 ECAC East) at the Beacons Ice Arena.
The Beacons (6-0-0 ECAC East) moved to within one game of the best start in school history, as the only other team to start a year 10-0 in school history was the 1997 Men's Lacrosse team that started 11-0 under long-time head coach Myles Berry.
Juniors Kit Sitterley (Mooresville, N.C). and Frankie DeAugustine (Pittsburgh, Pa.) combined for three goals and two assists, to help the Beacons end first-semester undefeated. Sitterley netted his seventh and eight goals of the season to move into third-place on the team with 15 points, while DeAugustine added his fourth goal and fourth assist of the year.
Senior Mike Kuhn (Holbrook, Mass.) and freshman Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) added the final two goals for the Beacons who are now 5-0-0 at the Beacons Ice Arena this season.
In net, Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) improved to 3-0-0 on the year by making a season-high 25 saves on 26 shots.
Zach Dymock scored the Huskies lone goal of the day, to snap a 106 minute and 51 second scoreless streak that spanned across three games. Freshman goalie Kyle Shapiro fell to 1-8-0 on the season, after stopping 32 of 37 shots.
UMass Boston and the University of Southern Maine each finished with a power-play goal apiece, with the Beacons penalty-killer killing off seven of eight Husky opportunities, compared to just 2-of-3 for the Huskies penalty kill.
After a slow first period, UMass Boston scored two goals in the second and third periods to easily earn the 5-1 victory.
Kuhn gave the Beacons a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, when Nathan Milam (Westland, Mich.) fed a pass to Stephen Buco (North Providence, R.I.) from behind the net, and Buco slipped it to a wide-open Kuhn just outside the crease for a goal at 10:22.
The Beacons slick passing carried over into the second period with Sitterley and DeAugustine serving as the recipients of nice feeds.
Josh Haverstrom (Coral Springs, Fla.) perfectly set up Sitterley's first goal with a pass across the crease for an easy one-timer, and DeAugustine potted home his goal on the power-play thanks to a nice pass from Sitterley. Jeremy Finger (Orlando, Fla.) and Brett Mason (Rowley, Mass.) picked up the second assists on the two goals.
Southern Maine cut the deficit to 3-1 at the 15:39 mark, when Dymock sent a shot from the blue line through traffic and past Faust on the power-play. Cole Klippenstein and Sam Guimond recorded assists on the play.
UMass Boston tacked on a fourth goal at 5:44 of the third, when DeAugustine and Peter MacIntyre (Norfolk, Mass.) went back-and-forth before finding Larkin for an easy tally.
Sitterley's second goal came off a flukey rebound, that left the junior a wide-open net with Shapiro out of position. Finger and Andrew Crawford (Medford, Mass.) were credited with helpers on the play.
UMass Boston will be off for almost a month, before the Beacons host the 50th Annual Codfish Bowl on Sunday January 4 and Monday January 5. The Beacons will host Connecticut College in the opening round of the tournament, with the winner taking on the winner of Hamilton College and Lake Forest College in the Championship Game.
