Six Players Score To Lead Men's Hockey Past Curry 6-4

Box Score

MILTON, Mass.—Six different players scored to lead UMass Boston men's hockey (2-0-0) to their first 2-0 start since the 1997-98 season, with a 6-4 victory over host Curry College (0-2-0) Sunday afternoon at the Max Ulin Rink.

A day after scoring the second-most goals in program history (15), UMass Boston had 12 players record a point, to help the Beacons to their first-ever 2-0 start under ninth-year head coach Peter Belisle.

After trailing 2-1 heading into the first intermission, UMass Boston scored three-straight goals to open up a 4-2 lead in the second period. Senior captain Mike Kuhn (Holbrook, Mass.) potted the game-winning goal 4:19 into the third period, with the first of two UMass Boston short-handed goals.

Junior Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) overcame a slow start to earn his first victory of the season, with 24 saves on 28 shots.

Adam Valadao recorded a game-high two goals for the host Colonels, while linemates Ryan Fitzgerald and Jordan Reed each finished with a game-high three points for Curry. The Colonels dropped their season-opener on Saturday, when they fell 4-1 to #8/11 Babson College.

Derek Mohney dropped to 0-2 on the year in net for Curry, after stopping 34 of 39 shots.

UMass Boston finished with a 40-28 advantage in shots. While both sides finished 0-for-4 on the power-play, the Beacons held a big edge in special teams, with a pair of shorthanded goals.

UMass Boston was the first to get on the board at the 7:56 minute mark.  Junior Peter MacIntyre (Norfolk, Mass.) took a slap shot just over the blueline that sailed over the shoulder of Mohney.  MacIntyre was assisted by sophomore Tyler Bishop (Ramsey, N.J.) and freshman Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.).

The Colonels were quick to answer back as they tied the score at one, just 44 seconds later.  Reed earned his first tally of the season after collecting a loose puck in front of net and one-timing it past Faust.

Curry took a 2-1 advantage heading into the first intermission when Valadao netted his first of two on the night. Reed sent Fitzgerald a pass who found an open Valadao for the score.

The Beacons came out strong to start the second stanza netting three goals in the 20-minute span.

Two of the goals were in the opening three minutes.  The first came with only 1:18 off the clock.  The Beacons earned the face-off win and had the puck in the Colonel's defensive end when senior Dan Cornell (Abington, Mass.) made a quick pass to junior Frankie DeAugustine (Pittsburg, Pa.) to tie the game.

The go-ahead tally was scored by junior Kit Sitterley (Mooresville, N.C.) who skated around the crease and tucked the puck low into the back corner of the net.  Sitterley was assisted by freshman Josh Haverstrom (Coral Springs, Fla.).

UMass Boston extended the lead to 4-2 midway through when junior Mike Miller (Wrentham, Mass.) ripped a shot from the corner of the ice after receiving a pass from sophomore Albee Daley (Averill Park, N.Y.).

Valadao earned his second of the game at the 16:03 mark and cut the Beacon's lead to one before the teams headed back into the locker room.  Reed was credited with his second assist while Fitzgerald earned his second.

The Beacons took control of the final period with a demanding 13-4 advantage in shots.

Kuhn netted his first of the season when he collected the puck off a rebound and slide it past Mohney for a huge shorthanded goal.  Kuhn was assisted by classmate Stephen Buco (North Providence, R.I.).

Curry once again cut the lead back to one with 3:16 remaining to play.  Sophomore Jake Heisinger (Winnipeg, Manitoba) was awarded his first goal on the season after he one-timed the puck past the glove of Faust.

With 48 seconds left the Colonels had a 6-4 man-up situation looking to tie the game at five. The Colonels battled with the puck in UMB's defensive zone but at 19:31, junior Connor McStravick (Philadelphia, Pa.) tallied his team's sixth on an unassisted short-handed empty net goal for the win.

UMass Boston will look for their first ECAC East Conference victory of the season Friday night, when the Beacons travel to Henniker, N.H. to take on New England College at 7:30 p.m.
