BOSTON, Mass.--Three players recorded hat tricks and UMass Boston men's hockey (1-0-0) scored 10 goals in the third period to roll to a 15-3 season-opening victory over UMass Dartmouth (0-1-0) Saturday afternoon at the Beacons Ice Arena.
The Beacons' 15 goals were the second-most in program history, behind only the program's first-ever game. UMass Boston defeated Franklin Pierce University 20-2 on November 22, 1981, in the team's season-opener.
Junior linemates Kit Sitterley (Mooresville, N.C.) and Jeremy Finger (Orlando, Fla.) led the offensive charge with six points apiece. Sitterley finished with three goals and three assists, while Finger missed out on the program-record for goals by one, with four goals and two helpers. The pair teamed up with freshman Josh Haverstrom (Coral Springs, Fla.), who picked up an assist in his first career game, for seven goals and six assists.
Senior Nathan Milam (Westland, Mich.) was the third player to record a hat trick for the Beacons. Milam's senior linemates Stephen Buco (North Providence, R.I.) and Mike Kuhn (Holbrook, Mass.) added four points apiece, as the Beacons' top line finished with five goals and six assists.
Junior Connor McStravick (Philadelphia, Pa.), sophomore Albee Daley (Averill Park, N.Y.) and freshman Brett Mason (Rowley, Mass.) also added goals, as the Beacons' earned their eight-straight win over the Corsairs.
In all, 16 of the Beacons' 18 skaters recorded at least one point, with freshman Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) joining fellow freshman Haverstrom and Mason in picking up his first collegiate point.
UMass Boston junior goalie Zach Andrews (Coral Springs, Fla.) posted 20 saves on 23 shots, to move into sole possesion of second-place all-time in program history with his 30th career victory.
Freshman forward Luc Sauve provided the lone bright spot for the Corsairs, as the freshman scored two goals in the final 1:01 of the contest. Evangelos Stefanou added the other goal for the Corsairs who were coming off of a 5-18-2 campaign.
Sophomore goalie JJ Solloway played the full 60 minutes for the Corsairs, as the sophomore stopped 36 of 51 shots.
UMass Boston outscored the Corsairs 4-1 in the first, 1-0 in the second and 10-2 in the third, to earn their most lopsided victory ever against UMass Dartmouth.
For the game, the Beacons outshot UMass Dartmouth 51-23 and scored on all five of their power-play opportunities. In fact, the Beacons scored four times on the man-advantage in the opening 2:38 of the third period, after UMass Dartmouth's Jerry Laakso was called for a five-minute major penalty.
UMass Dartmouth on the other side ended the day 0-for-3 on the man-advantage.
UMass Boston will have a quick turnaround, as they travel to neighboring Curry College Sunday at 4:40 p.m.
