Box Score BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – A late goal by Alex Thompson ended men's soccer bid at tying the program record for wins in a season as the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy tied men's soccer 2-2 Wednesday evening in a non-conference match at Clean Harbors Field.
With the draw the Beacons record now stands at 12-4-2 overall, while for Mass. Maritime they are now 6-7-2 overall. Currently ranked 10th in New England for the first-time ever in program history the Beacons closed out their 2014 non-conference schedule with a 7-4-2 record.
Thompson's game-tying goal came with less than six minutes to play in regulation. The Beacons nearly regained the lead in the closing minutes, but a shot by Lenir Lima (Mindelo, Cape Verde) was stopped by the Buccaneers goalkeeper. In overtime, UMass kept up the pressure as they outshot their non-conference opponents 6-2.
Unfortunately they were unable to pick-up that key score as the match came to a close with the score tied at two apiece. Wednesday's match was another strong display by the Beacons offense as they combined for 27 shots. Mass. Maritime was held to just eight shots, but made them count in the end as they earned a huge draw.
Finding the back of the net for the Beacons was Marcelo Cunha (Goiania Goias, Brazil) and Pedro Dasilva (Fogo, Cape Verde). Cunha's goal, which was assisted by Douglas Silveira (Revere, Mass.), was the second in the last week. Dasilva continued his impressive season scoring his 13th goal of the campaign.
In goal, Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.) earned his second draw of the year as the junior made three saves in the 110 minutes of action.
The Buccaneers struck first in the contest in the 13th minute, and held UMass off the scoreboard until the 30th minute. Dasilva would connect to give UMass the lead in the 57th minute, but they could not maintain that lead in the closing minutes.
UMass also led the match in corner kicks with six, while Mass. Maritime finished the contest with three.
The Beacons will close out the regular season this Saturday when they host Rhode Island College at 1 p.m. in the final Little East Conference match of the year. Prior to the start of the match, UMass will honor its four seniors.
