The victory improved the Beacons overall record to 18-7, 5-0 in the conference. It also marked the eighth straight win for UMass over the Warriors, dating back to the 2008 season. For the Warriors they grabbed their first win over the Beacons since the 2007 season, but fell to 12-13, 3-2 in the Little East.
Tuesday's match was a back-and-forth affair in all four sets. In total the score was tied a combined 22 times, with the two teams exchanging control of the lead a combined 16 times. Adrianna Mihalek was the driving force for the Warriors with her match-high 12 kills on 43 attempts.
For Morrison, she kept the Beacons run at sixth straight LEC regular season title alive with some impressive play in the middle of the court. The North Reading native registered a .375 hitting percentage, and also picked-up an ace and a block assist in the win.
Sophomores Julia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) and Jodie Munchbach (Dedham, Mass.) combined for 16 kills respectively, while Bri Sousa (Swansea, Mass.) posted a season-high .571 hitting percentage. Setter Pepper Baker (Tallahassee, Fla.) played her best match by far this season at the setter position. The sophomore put-up a career-best 37 assist and also had three of the Beacons 15 aces. Murphy led the team with five aces, but it was Mihalek who led the match with six.
Defensively the two teams were nearly even with ECSU earning a 54-53 advantage in digs, but it was the Beacons who dominated at the net with their 13 blocks as compared to the Warriors' seven. Elizabeth Glavan (Edina, Minn.) led the back-row for UMass with 14 put-ups, while for the Warriors it was Allie Luppi who posted 18 digs in the loss.
Throughout the four sets, each team used long runs to earn some distance on the scoreboard. Perhaps the most devastating run from the Beacons came in the fourth set, when Murphy unloaded nine straight points for UMass to make it 18-7 for the Beacons for the Beacons. Freshman Breana Kemp (Red Bluff, Calif.) secured Tuesday's win for UMass with a perfectly placed ace.
