Box Score KEENE, N.H.—A Marcus Pizzetti (Malden, Mass.) goal would prove to be the only marker for the Beacons as they battled Keene State College to a 1-1 double overtime Little East Conference draw Saturday afternoon at Owl Athletic Complex..
The Beacons remain undefeated in LEC play, with a 4-0-1 conference record to go with a 10-4-1 overall mark. The draw extends KSC's unbeaten streak to six, giving the Owls an 8-5-1 overall record, and a 2-2-1 mark in the LEC. Saturday's draw also ends a seven-game skid for the Beacons dating back to 2007. That last win for UMass over the Owls was in a 3-2 double OT decision at Keene in 2006.
Keene State nearly opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Conor Leahy found himself alone in space, but Beacons' goalie Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.) got down to make the stop. Yazid Eidah was next to try his chance, but shot straight at Rosales in the ninth minute.
Two minutes later, the Beacons were in front. UMB was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area, and Pizzetti's effort beat the wall and the goalie to the left side.
KSC responded with pressure, but Rosales turned away a shot by Eddie Mercer in the 31st minute and from Aidan Dean in the 43rd to keep the game 1-0 at halftime.
Six minutes after the break, the Owls were even. KSC was given a free kick of their own in the 52nd minute, and Brett Sullivan's delivery was headed down by Leahy. Rosales could not hold on to the ball, and Jacques was on the spot to tap in from point blank range.
The teams traded scoring chances in the next five minutes, as Cam Rogers whistled a shot wide for the Owls, and Elton Teixeira (Boston, Mass.) rattled the crossbar in the 57th minute.
Mike Ketterman, who came on to start the second half for the Owls, kept the game at 1-1 with several fantastic saves, including stops on Rolando Barbosa (Fogo, Cape Verde) in the in the 69th minute, and again on Luis Mattos (Sete Lagoas, Brazil) in the 77th.
Keene State was reduced to 10 men when Dylan Bisceglia received his second yellow card with two seconds remaining in regulation, but despite being down a man in overtime, the Owls held firm to preserve the draw.
Ketterman came to the Owls' rescue early in the second overtime, making a spectacular reaction save on Mattos' scissor kick effort. Rogers had the Owls final chance, sending a shot wide in the 109th minute as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
It was the first ever tie in the 19 games played between the two schools. Rosales finished with five saves in the Beacons' net. Ketterman also made five stops. Mark Keller started the game for the Owls, and did not make a save in the first half.
UMass Boston travels to Worcester State for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Wednesday.
