Men's Soccer Wins Second Straight, 3-2 over Newbury

Box Score

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – A Jerry Phanor (Boston, Mass.) goal with less than five minutes to play proved to the be the deciding score, as men's soccer managed to hold on to earn a 3-2 win over Newbury College in a rare Sunday afternoon contest at Hedley Field.

The win, which marks the second straight for the Beacons, improved their overall record to 5-2, as the Beacons continue produce one of the best starts in recent memory.  For Newbury they fell to 2-4 following the one goal loss.

Phanor's deciding goal was huge for UMB especially since Newbury was able to score their second goal 27 seconds later.  In total four of the game's five goals were scored in a 10 minute span. Newbury did break the scoreless draw in the 50th minute, but UMB would then respond with three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead.

Edmilson Barros (Boston, Mass.) was responsible for the first two Beacons goals, with Luis Alva also picking-up an assist.  Assisting on the game-winner was Matheus Reis (Somerville, Mass.).

Between the goal posts Camilo Florez (Manizales, Colombia) combined for six saves and kept the Nighthawks scoreless for the first 49+ minutes of Sunday's non-conference match.  Sunday's win also marked the second for UMB over Newbury in 2013, having defeated them on the second day of the Lasell College Kick Off Classic by the final of 3-1 on September 1.

On the day, the Beacons outshot their non-conference opponents 31-21 and held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.  The two Newbury goalkeepers combined for saves respectively, with  the loss going to Cody Nash-Gibney.

The Beacons return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Salem State University for a 4 p.m. non-conference game.
