Catholic University Defeats Lacrosse, 10-4

WASHINGTON D.C. – A 5-0 run after the first quarter carried the Cardinals of Catholic University of America to a 10-4 non-conference win over lacrosse Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium on the final day of the Beacons spring trip to the nation's capital.

After a one goal each first quarter, the Cardinals fired off four goals through the second and one in the third to push their lead to five.  They would then score four more over the course of the final two quarters to improve their overall record to 5-6. 

UMass, who saw their first goal of the day come from Nick Weiss, was unable to find the back of the cage for almost 27 minutes before scoring their second tally of the day.  UMB managed three goals over the final 30 minutes of play and with the loss fell to 2-6 on the year.

The Beacons defense had to work extremely hard in Saturday's match-up as the host Cardinals fired-off 53 shots.  Senior goalie Henry Bristol (South Hadley, Mass.) was solid all afternoon tallying 23 stops.  UMB's back line also forced a combined 17 turnovers.

On the other side of the field, the Beacons attack struggle all afternoon as they turned over the ball a total of 24 times, while only firing off 17 shots in the loss.  The Beacons were also 22-for-33 on clear attempts and were 0-for-3 on man-up goals.

Also finding the back of the net in Saturday's match-up was Ryan McGoff (Charlestown, Mass.), Dom Fichera (Scituate, Mass.), and John Powers (Marshfield, Mass.).  Donny Delpha (Walpole, Mass.) recorded the lone Beacons assist. 

On the turf UMass finished with 18 groundballs, while Catholic finished with 40.  Of those 40, Kevin Murray scooped-up a game-best seven for the Cardinals.  Wes Lane (Hingham, Mass.) and Bristol were matched with a team-best three groundballs.

Lacrosse returns to action next Saturday when they travel to Plymouth State University for their first Little East Conference game of the season.  The Beacons will face the Panthers at 12:30 p.m. at The Holderness School.
