William Paterson (NJ) Drops Baseball in Spring Trip Finale

Box Score

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – A 3-for-5, three RBI and two runs scored afternoon for Rich Guillod helped to carry the Pioneers of William Paterson University to an 11-2 win over baseball in the spring trip finale for the Beacons Thursday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park.

With Thursday's loss the Beacons finished their 2013 trip to Florida with a less than stellar 3-6 record, which was plagued by errors.  For the Pioneers they improved to 8-3 overall and marked the second New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) team to hand the Beacons a loss this season.

Known for their hitting, the Pioneers pounded out 15 hits in the win over the Beacons with five of those stretched for extra bases.  UMass nearly matched their New Jersey opponent in hits, as they finished with 10, but UMB was unable to get players around the base paths when players did get on.

Hoping to build-off of yesterday's back-to-back nine innings doubleheader the Beacons looked to close out their trip with a huge win over the Pioneers.  Unfortunately, William Paterson struck early and consistently as they tacked on six runs in the first three innings, while UMB only managed two in the bottom half of the third.

William Paterson tacked on two more runs in the fourth and then three more in the eighth to clinch the victory.  On the hill Steve Coral improved to 4-0 for the Pioneers as he went seven complete innings scattering nine singles, while only allowing the two runs in the third.

The Beacons bullpen featured a combined four hurlers in Thursday's contest, with Steve Roche (Worcester, Mass.) and Ryan Augustine (Burlington, Conn.) each having solid appearances.  Junior right Lucas Ilges (Gloucester, Mass.) was handed the loss after going just 2.1 innings allowing six runs, all earned, on nine hits.

Senior Matt Consiglio (Southbury, Conn.) led the Beacons in total hits as he finished 3-for-5, while Charles LaPaglia (Marshfield, Mass.) recorded the lone RBI for UMB as he went 2-for-3.

Baseball will make their New England debut on Sunday, weather permitting, as they take on nationally ranked St. Joseph's College (ME) in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon.  The game will be played at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, MA and will mark the second time that the two teams will face each other this season.

In only their second and third games of the year, the Beacons split with the No. 9 Monks to earn their first win of the year, behind a solid pitching performance from Kyle Szatrowski (Agawam, Mass.)
