Plymouth State Takes A Pair From Baseball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PLYMOUTH, N.H -- Led by second baseman Ryan McIntosh the Plymouth State University Panthers  (15-19, 4-8) swept UMass Boston (17-16-1, 5-7) Saturday afternoon by a 10-0 margin in seven innings and 6-2 in the second game at Panther Park in Plymouth, New Hampshire. The Beacons managed just seven hits in 18 innings and committed five errors that led to nine of the 15 runs scored by Plymouth State.

McIntosh went 5-for-7 on the day with eight RBI and two runs scored out of the five spot for the Panthers. The senior hit the lone home run of the day and also added a double, one of five extra-base hits the Panthers had Saturday afternoon.

Senior Mike Mattei (Spencer, Mass.) led the Beacons with a run and an RBI, while Mark McCormack (Shelton, Conn.) added the other RBI on the day and reached base three times with a hit and two walks.

Sophomore Jamill Moquette (Boston, Mass.) extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a single in game one but failed to record a hit in game two. Matt Consiglio (Southbury, Conn.) also saw his hitting streak to come to an end, but the junior extended his streak of successfully getting on base to 18 games with a walk in each game of the doubleheader.

In game one, UMass Boston struggle to overcome four errors in the field, while they mustered just two hits against Plymouth State's Bobby Chatfield.

Moquette and right fielder Charles LaPaglia (Marshfield, Mass.) accounted for the lone Beacons hits in the game.

On the mound, pitcher Daniel Heefner (Tracy, Calif.) pitched six innings and allowed six runs but just two were earned. The junior struck out three Panthers batters and allowed just five hits and one walk. Tyler Kane (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Matt Dziok (Southhampton, Mass.) each pitched one-third of an inning in relief.

Plymouth State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning behind a McIntosh homer but those would the last earned runs the Panthers would score in game one.

The Panthers added four runs in the bottom of the fifth and the bottom of the seventh after the Beacons committed two errors in each inning.

Game two had a much different feel, with the Beacons gaining a little traction offensively and minimizing the defensive mistakes.

Junior pitcher Michael Boughton (New Britain, Conn.) took the mound and allowed four runs, three earned over five innings and Will Barrack (Lancaster, Va.) pitched the final three innings allowing two hits and two runs.

After Plymouth State grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, UMass Boston took their only lead of the day with a two-run fifth. Wilberto Sanjuro (Boston, Mass.) reached base to start the inning on an error on the second baseman and Luke Fischetti (Liverpool, N.Y.) came on to pinch run for him. Mattei followed with an RBI double to tie the game at one. Three batters later with two outs in the inning, McCormack added a single to right field to drive in Mattei to give UMass Boston a 2-1 lead.

The Panthers responded with theee runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning behind four hits and a walk. Mike Cappiello doubled to left field to score one run and McIntosh had the key hit with a single to left field to score two runs to make it a 4-2 game.

UMass Boston put runners on first and third in the top of the sixth and a runner on first in the seventh but failed to put any more runs across the board.

The Beacons will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Endicott College to take on the Gulls for a doubleheader starting at Noon.
