NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – It was a slugfest all afternoon as baseball battled conference rival UMass Dartmouth to a Little East Conference split Saturday afternoon.  After cranking out 19 hits in game one to earn a 16-6 win in seven innings, the host Corsairs combined for 16 hits in game two to earn a 11-4 win over the Beacons at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex.

With Saturday's split UMass Boston remains tied fourth in the conference standings with Rhode Island College as they improved to 15-11 overall, 4-3 in the conference.  The Corsairs remain in sixth place overall in the standings as they sit with a 13-13 mark overall, and 2-5 record in the Little East.

In the opener the Beacons saw six different players record two or more hits.  Of those six four of those recorded three hits, with sophomore Jamill Moquette (Boston, Mass.) and junior Matt Consiglio (Southbury, Conn.) each crushing their third and second home runs of the season respectively.  Moquette went 3-for-5 in game one and drove in four runs.  Consiglio also went 3-for-5 and had two RBI and a game-high three runs scored.

On the hill, Daniel Heefner (Tracy, Calif.) picked-up his second straight conference win as he held the Corsairs to just three runs on five hits through six complete innings.  The junior righty did not surrender a walk and fanned four batters.  Tyler Kapushinski (New Britain, Conn.) closed out the seventh to help the Beacons to the mercy-rule victory.

Also making contact in the opener were senior Mark McCormack (Shelton, Conn.) and Mike Mattei (Spencer, Mass.).  The duo combined for six hits in 10 at-bats and also had six RBI and three runs scored.  Junior outfielder Nick Grassetti (Agawam, Mass.) also made solid contact as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. 

Despite falling into an early 3-0 hole in the second, the Beacons who were the home team in Saturday's doubleheader answered right back with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame.  They then combined for nine runs in the middle three innings and two more in the seventh, while hold the Corsairs to just three-runs of their own in the top half of the seventh to secure the victory.

In the nightcap, UMass Dartmouth took a page right out of the Beacons book as they tallied 16 hits, while holding UMass Boston to just eight.  Once again it was Consiglio, who now stands at eight straight games with at-least one hit, as the junior infielder went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Moquette, the reigning Little East Conference Rookie of the Week, also had a hot bat in the nightcap as he went yard for the second straight game, while also picking up a double to finish the day 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. 

Lucas Ilges (Gloucester, Mass.) was handed only his second loss of the year after surrendering six runs, 3 of which were earned, on nine hits.  Will Barrack (Lancaster, Va.) took over for the Beacons in the sixth and went two innings, allowing four runs on four hits, while also striking out three. 

The first three innings of game two saw just one player touch home plate from each team.  It was not until the top half of the fourth that UMass Dartmouth was able to gain some breathing room as they tacked on three runs to make it 4-1.  A scoreless fifth would make way for another three run inning for the Corsairs extending their lead to six-runs. 

Boston closed the gap slightly with a two-run bottom of the seventh, but that was quickly erased by a four-run top of the eighth.  The Beacons tallied their final run of the day in the eighth when Moquette crushed his second home run of the afternoon.

Baseball returns to action on Tuesday when they host the University of Southern Maine at 3:30 p.m. at Yetten Field in Waltham.
