Babson Sneaks by Baseball in Non-Conference Play, 4-3

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. – After getting the go-ahead run in the seventh inning the Beavers of Babson College (17-11) managed to collect the deciding out in the top of the ninth with bases loaded to sneak past baseball (14-10) by the final score of 4-3 Friday afternoon at Govoni Field.

With a Beacon on every base and two outs on the scoreboard, Babson's Rick Gilbody was able to cap off the win, just two innings after Trevor Boyce drove in the go-ahead and game-winning run.  Boyce finished the day 2-for-4 with the RBI and a run scored.  Gilbody improved to 4-0 on the year after going 2.1 innings and allowing just one hit.

On the day UMass combined for nine hits, while the Beavers combined for eight.  However it was the Beacons 11 stranded base runners that proved to be the deciding factor, especially in the final three innings.  The Beacons saw multi hits from both Matt Consiglio (Southbury, Conn.) and Mike Mattei (Spencer, Mass.).

Consiglio, who has recorded at-least one hit in the last six games, drove in one of the Beacons three runs, with the other RBI going to Wilberto Sanjuro (Boston, Mass.) and Mark McCormack (Shelton, Conn.)

Kyle Szatrowski (Agawam, Mass.) was handed the tough loss after allowing just one run on three hits over the final 5.1 innings.  The Agawam native tallied three strikeouts on the day.

In the first, UMass and Babson would score three of the game's seven runs.  The Beacons started the afternoon off with an RBI single from Consiglio to take the early lead.  Babson responded right back in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs to jump out to their first lead of the day.

The Beavers then made it a two-run game in the third on a bases-loaded walk.  McCormack cut Babson's lead back to one after his RBI fielder's choice which scored Nick Grassetti (Agawam, Mass.).

Sanjuro then tied the score at 3-3 following his sacrifice fly to deep center field, which allowed Charles LaPaglia (Marshfield, Mass.) to score from third base.  Unfortunately the tie would only last an inning as the Beavers scored the deciding run in the seventh.

Baseball returns to action tomorrow when they travel to UMass Dartmouth for a noon Little East Conference doubleheader.
