BOSTON, MA - Junior goaltender Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) made 13 saves to earn his first victory of the season in net while the defense as a whole held strong around him as the University of Massachusetts Boston lacrosse team locked down the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 8-4, this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center Field on the campus of UMass Boston. With the decision the Beacons are now 3-5 overall while the Buccaneers fall to 2-8.

UMass Boston held a 4-2 advantage after the opening 15 minutes of play thanks to goals from four separate scorers. Freshman midfielder Grady Wick (Newton, MA) broke the ice 2:31 into the game when he found the net on a pass from freshman attackman John Perro (Northbridge, MA). Freshman attackman Tommy Petitti (Quincy, MA) added to the lead with an unassisted tally at 9:40. Mass Maritime senior midfielders Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, MA) and Craig Nichols (Marshfield, MA) hooked up just 46 seconds later to put the Buccaneers on the board, 2-1. With 3:19 left in the quarter, junior midfielder Pat Driscoll (Hingham, MA) setup junior midfielder Rob Uhrig (Boston, MA) to make it 3-1 and then junior midfielder Ryan FitzGerald (Abington, MA) followed with an unassisted strike. In the final 27 seconds, senior attackman Chris Davis (Cohasset, MA) made the best of a pass from sophomore midfielder Kevin Flanigan (Sandwich, MA) to cut the deficit, 4-2.

After a scoreless second quarter, Mass Maritime opened the second half with an unassisted tally from junior midfielder Will Doucette (Manchester, MA) at 10:20 to pull within a goal. However, the Beacons rattled off three consecutive goals in the closing five minutes of the quarter to retake control. Petitti, Wick and Uhrig each collected their second marker of the game to give UMass Boston a 7-3 lead going into the final stanza. Wick, Perro and freshman attackman Dean Driscoll (Cohasset, MA) assisted on each of the goals, respectively.

The teams traded goals in the fourth quarter as the Beacons focused on running down the time with their offensive possessions. Bickley repaid the favor for the earlier setup from Nichols as this time he was on the passing end of a score from the Mass Maritime duo. Yet, Perro buried an unassisted goal with 5:24 to play for his third point of the afternoon to close the scoring 8-4 in favor of UMass Boston.

With the victory, Fitti improves to 1-3 in net, while freshman goaltender Jack Murphy (Cohasset, MA) took the loss with 11 stops and drops to 2-6.

Both teams return to action Saturday, April 9 at 1:00 p.m. when the Beacons travel to Mansfield, CT to face Eastern Connecticut State in a Little East Conference tilt and the Buccaneers host MIT.
