The Beacons Netted The First Three Goals of the Game

BOSTON, MA - The University of Southern Maine defense held host University of Massachusetts Boston scoreless for a span of nearly 39 minutes and allowed just four goals on the day, en-route to an 11-4 victory today in a Little East Conference match at the Clark Athletic Center field on the campus of UMass Boston. The Huskies improve to 5-9 overall and 3-3 in LEC play, while the Beacons fall to 5-10 and 0-6.

UMass Boston opened the contest with the first three scores of the afternoon, but Southern Maine closed out the initial quarter with four unanswered goals in a span of 2:03 to take a 4-3 edge. Freshman attackman John Perro (Northbridge, MA) opened the scoring with his 11th tally of the year at the 7:47 mark on a helper from junior midfielder Pat Driscoll (Hingham, MA) with a man advantage. Perro fed junior middie Rob Uhrig (Boston, MA) just 71 seconds later for his 15th goal on the year and a 2-0 Beacons' lead, before freshman midfielder Grady Wick (Newton, MA) put UMass Boston ahead, 3-0, with his eighth goal of the season with 2:52 showing on the clock. It would be the Beacons' last score until the fourth quarter. Freshman attackman Dylan Bousquet-Smith (Bowdoinham, ME) cracked the scoring column for the Huskies at 2:09 on a feed from junior midfielder Willie Joy (Portland, ME) for his team-leading 21st goal of the campaign. Joy found the back of the net for a goal of his own just 48 seconds later and junior midfielder Kyle Baker (Kennebunk, ME) followed suit with his 20th tally of the year just 33 seconds later to knot the game at 3-3. Senior attackman Tim Bryant (Peterborough, NH) scored the first of a game-high four goals to give Southern Maine the lead for good with just six ticks left on the clock.

Sophomore attackman Mark White (Oakville, ONT) extended the Huskies' margin to 5-3 with his 15th goal of the year at 12:06 of the second stanza, before Bryant found twine for a 6-3 lead just 1:40 later. That would be the last score of the half.

Southern Maine took advantage of a pair of man-up situations to score the only two goals of the third quarter as well. Joy hooked up with Bousquet-Smith again with 4:16 left in the period and Bryant rung up another goal with 31 seconds left in the period for an 8-3 advantage.

Bryant struck again with 12:16 to go in the game for his 20th goal of the year and a 9-3 lead, before sophomore midfielder Rob Tagle (Freehold, NJ) located freshman attackman Tommy Petitti (Quincy, MA) with a man-advantage for his 17th tally of the year to end a scoring drought of 38:59 and pull UMass Boston to within 9-4 at the 6:07 mark. The Beacons were down two men later in the quarter and White took advantage with his second goal of the afternoon at 4:24, before freshman attackman Austin Polisky (Auburn, ME) netted his third goal of the year with 52 seconds left in the contest to give the Huskies an 11-4 final.

Sophomore goalie Kyle Dussault (Lewiston, ME) stopped five shots to earn the victory for Southern Maine, while junior Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) stopped five of 11 shots he faced in the first 19:34 of action for UMass Boston. Senior Peter Towe (Hockessin, DE) made 12 saves on 17 shots that he faced in the final 40:26 in his final home game for the Beacons.

Junior midfielder Zach Blauvelt (Lewiston, ME dominated the middle of the field, winning 17 of 19 face-offs and came up with a team-high eight ground balls for the Huskies, while senior defender Tim Clark (South Portland, ME) finished with five ground balls and an assist for the visitors. Senior midfielder Josh Reinhold (Tampa, FL) was also active on the defensive side with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Freshman defender Andrew Guy (Northbridge, MA) led UMass Boston with eight ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Driscoll finished with four ground balls in addition to his assist.

The Beacons will be in action again when they close out the season in North Dartmouth, MA in a Little East Conference match-up with University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Saturday, April 30 at 1:00 p.m., while Southern Maine hosts Western Connecticut State University on May 1 at 12:00 p.m.
