Salem, MA -- Ryan Gendreau (Danvers, MA) scored three straight goals to open up a tightly contested Little East Conference match and help the Salem State Vikings earn an 8-4 win over the UMass Boston Beacons at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon. The game originally scheduled for UMass Boston was moved to Salem State due to poor field conditions at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston.

Salem State improves to 4-3, 1-0 in the Little East conference while UMass Boston drops to 2-4 and 0-1 in conference.

Gendreau picked up the hat-trick with the first of his three unanswered goals at the 4:09 mark of the second to turn a 3-2 Salem State lead into a 6-2 advantage with 5:11 remaining in the third period.

The Vikings once again got off to a fast start opening up a 3-0 lead after one period. Greg Shidler (Peabody, MA) continued his impressive rookie campaign by scoring his team-leading 19th goal on an assist from Robert Mulroy (Swampscott, MA) just over two minutes into the game to give Salem State a 1-0 lead.

Matt Pardee (Gloucester, MA) and Mulroy also scored in the period as the Vikings carried a three-goal advantage into the second period.

Tommy Petitti (Quincy, MA) and Pat Driscoll (Hingham, MA) each scored a goal in the second period for UMass Boston to bring the deficit to one goal at 3-2 before Gendreau's outburst pushed the lead to four goals.

Dean Driscoll (Cohasset, MA) cut the lead in half for the Beacons with a score at 4:07 of the third period and Pat Driscoll added his second score of the game at the 13:35 mark to pull UMass Boston to within 6-4. However, Mulroy answered with two straight goals, the first on an assist from Gendreau at the 6:46 mark and the second with 1:40 remaining on a man-advantage to put the game out of reach at 8-4.

Brendan Gill (Chelmsford, MA) stopped 16-of-28 shots to pick up his fourth win of the year. Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) also made 16 saves against 35 shots in the loss.

Salem State is back in action on Thursday when the team travels to Becker College for a 4:00PM match. UMass Boston goes to MIT on Tuesday for a 4:30 start time.
