McCORMACK LEADS BASEBALL AT ROGER WILLIAMS, 15-6

May 6, 2010

Box Score

BRISTOL, RI - Sophomore center fielder Mark McCormack (Shelton, CT) went 4-6 with four runs batted in and a double to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston baseball team over host Roger Williams University, 15-6, today in Bristol, RI. The Beacons have won six of their last seven games and improve to 23-14 on the season, while the Hawks fall to 12-24.

A ninth-inning home run by Roger Williams' Grant Bolin (Simsbury, CT) marked his school-record 20th career dinger

Bolin sent a shot to deep right field in his final at-bat of the game, moving him past Brian Johnson ('04) atop the all-time leaderboard for home runs as a Hawk. The power surge for Bolin has come late in his career, as he has tallied 14 home runs since the beginning of 2009.

UMass Boston jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when senior left fielder Drew Tambling (Sterling, MA) singled to lead off the game and extend his hitting streak to 10 games and scored on an RBI double by McCormack, which extended his own hitting streak to 10 games. Junior catcher Tim Fontaine (Worcester, MA) later brought home the second run with a sacrifice fly. Roger Williams would bring one run across in the fourth with Bolin scoring on an RBI single by Zach Porter (Middleboro, MA).

The Beacons broke out for four runs in their next at-bat on two-RBI hits by Tambling (Sterling, MA) and McCormack, extending their lead to five. Yet the Hawks continued to chip away at the deficit. RWU's Chris Comeau (Southbury, CT) and Tim Georgen (Bristol, CT) scored in the fifth, followed by Bolin's RBI single in the sixth to make it a 6-4 game.

In the top of the seventh, the Beacons broke the game open, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six runs in the inning, keyed by a two-run single from junior right fielder Jose Roman Santos (Tenares, DR) and a run-scoring single off the bat of McCormack to take a commanding 12-4 lead. Roger Williams' Matthew Roche (Bristol, CT) knocked an RBI double in the bottom of the inning to get one more run for the Hawks.

The Beacons would not be done scoring, as they scored three more in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run home run to center by junior second baseman Ryan Walsh (Newton, MA), who doubled in the seventh to keep his 10-game hitting streak alive, to put UMass Boston up by double-digits en route to the win. Walsh also recorded his third assist of the afternoon on a ground out in the fifth for the frame's second out to give him 310 career assists to break the school mark held by Matthew Thayer (2000-02).

Senior Danny Gomez (East Boston, MA) earned the win, going six innings while allowing four runs (three earned) off seven hits with five strikeouts. Freshman Daniel Heefner (Tracy, CA) picked up a three-inning save in relief, giving up a pair of runs.

McCormack added three runs scored to his day, while Tambling finished with three hits and three RBI and Walsh and Santos each knocked in a pair of runs with two hits.

Josh Orosz (Fairfield, CT) was tagged for 12 runs (six earned) in six and two-thirds innings in the loss. Chris Anderson (Beverly, MA) allowed three runs in one inning of work, while Logan Hartman (Fairfield, CT) and Billy Dunn (Fiskdale, MA) combined for one and a third scoreless innings. Bolin finished the day 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Porter and Roche each added two hits and an RBI.

Roger Williams (12-24) closes out the season Friday evening with a non-conference home game against Wheaton College at 3:30 p.m., while UMass Boston wraps up its regular season Saturday with a noon Little East doubleheader at home against Rhode Island College at 12:00 p.m. at Yetten Field in Waltham, MA.
