BASEBALL FALLS AT ENDICOTT, 7-1

April 2, 2010

Box Score

BEVERLY, MA - Four Endicott College pitchers combined to allow just one run on five hits while freshman Eric Lemke (Southington, CT) connected on a three-run home run in a five-run second, as the Gulls topped the University of Massachusetts Boston baseball team, 7-1, in non-conference baseball action on North Field in Beverly, Massachusetts on Friday afternoon. Endicott, winners of five straight, improves to 10-6 on the season, while the Beacons fall to 9-6.

Endicott jumped out to an early and commanding lead with a five-run second inning. The Gulls led off the frame with a single by the hot-hitting Ralph Fidaleo (Saugus, MA), followed by a single through the left side by Chris Dominguez (Braintree, MA). Mike Russo (Natick, MA) then plated Fidaleo with a sacrifice fly to right field.

After back-to-back singles by Endicott's Benjamin Petrides (Belchertown, MA) and Joe Kasabuski (Saugus, MA), the Gulls opened it up for good. Eric Lemke connected on a pitch and hit a high shot to deep right field. UMB's Ty Buccetti (Wallingford, CT) had a good jump off the bat, however the ball caromed off his glove and landed into the visitor's bullpen for a three-run home run.

The lead was all the Endicott pitching staff would need as Brendan Pittsley (Plympton, MA), Robbie Goldstick (Deerfield, IL), Rich Yutkins (Billerica, MA) and Tyler Hitchcock (Abington, MA) combined to allow just one run on five hits with six strikeouts. Pittsley started the game and went three innings without allowing a run before giving way to Goldstick. The sophomore transfer then tossed two innings, allowing one run, while Yutkins went three frames allowing just a single hit. Hitchcock finished the game off with one solid inning in relief.

Three Gulls posted multi-hit days as Fidaleo, Dominguez and Kasabuski each had two hits in the win. Fidaleo was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Dominguez was 2-for-4 while also scoring a run. Kasabuski finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Lemke led the way with three RBI and Andrew Betts (Bristol, CT) also added a run batted in for the Blue and Green.

The Beacons stranded eight runners in the setback. Senior left fielder Drew Tambling (Sterling, MA), junior catcher Tim Fontaine (Worcester, MA), sophomore third baseman Mike Mattei (Spencer, MA), junior designated hitter Jose Roman Santos (Tenares, DR) and Buccetti all collected a single in the losing effort for UMass Boston. Freshman starting pitcher Patrick Noble (Somerville, MA) made his collegiate debut on the mound for the Beacons, allowing five runs on seven hits, while striking out two in five innings of work.

Endicott returns to action on Saturday when the Gulls host Roger Williams University in a TCCC doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m. on North Field. UMass Boston looks to rebound on the same day in its Little East Conference opener against Eastern Connecticut State University, also slated for a noon first-pitch.
