BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AT UMASS DARTMOUTH, 7-3, 7-12

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team jumped out to a 7-0 lead and defeated University of Massachusetts Boston, 12-7, in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader game at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Sunday. UMass Boston took the opener, 7-3 to extend its school-record win streak to seven straight. The doubleheader was moved from Yetten Field in Waltham due to field conditions. UMass Boston was the home team and batted last in both games.

Junior catcher Matt Ryan (Uxbridge, MA) gave the Corsairs an early lead in the nightcap when he hit a three-run homer in the top of the first inning. Junior designated hitter Zak Talis (Lynnfield, MA) made it 5-0 with a two-run shot in the top of the third and junior first baseman Anthony Fiorita (North Reading, MA) and junior shortstop Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA) extended the lead with RBI doubles in the sixth.

Sophomore center fielder Mark McCormack (Shelton, CT) put the Beacons on the board with a two-run double in the last of the sixth, but the Corsairs scored four runs without the benefit of a base hit in the seventh and Ryan hit a solo homer in the eighth. Junior second baseman Ryan Walsh (Newton, MA) doubled home two runs in the eighth for UMB, and junior catcher Tim Fontaine (Worcester, MA) hit a three-run homer.

Freshman starter Aaron Brunette (North Andover, MA) pitched five and a third innings to earn the victory, improving to 2-0, while senior left-hander Andrew Lebrun (Stoneham, MA) took the loss for the Beacons and fell to 3-2.

UMass Boston got 15 hits in winning the opener. McCormack hit a two-run homer in the third and added a two-run double in the fourth, while Walsh singled home a run in the first and hit a solo homer in the seventh. Talis hit a two=run homer for the Corsairs in the first inning, and sophomore second baseman Dan DeMello (Taunton, MA) drove in the other run for the Corsairs with an infield out. Sophomore southpaw James Dalton (Apopka, FL) earned the win for UMB, improving to 4-1, while junior Tony Damon (San Bruno, CA) earned a save when he induced pinch-hitter Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA) to line into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth. Freshman Karney Boff (Dighton, MA) started and took the loss, falling to 2-1.

UMass Dartmouth is now 14-9 and 4-3 in the Little East Conference, while UMass Boston is now 16-10 and 3-3 in LEC play. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Tufts Monday. The Beacons will visit Curry College on Tuesday, April 20 for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
