REINFURT, MATTEI LEAD BASEBALL OVER SUFFOLK, 9-1

April 13, 2010

Box Score

Quincy, MA - The University of Massachusetts Boston baseball team (13-9 overall) topped Suffolk University (13-11 overall) by a 9-1 margin on Tuesday afternoon in non-league action. The Beacons collected 12 hits on the day and took advantage of six Suffolk errors as they scored nine unanswered runs in the contest to win their fourth straight game.

Sophomore third baseman Mike Mattei (Spencer, MA) and junior first baseman Connor Reinfurt (Manchester, NH) each had three hits to pace the Beacons' offense. Senior lefthander Andrew Lebrun (Stoneham, MA) picked up the win on the mound going five innings and only allowing one run on three hits. The Beacons' bullpen was solid as freshman Daniel Heefner (Tracy, CA) and sophomore Matt Young (Colchester, CT) allowed just two hits through the final four innings of the contest.

Suffolk jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first as the Rams led the game off with consecutive doubles by senior Rory Gentile (Gloucester, MA) and freshman Chris Stanley (Orange County, CA). Senior Bobby Barrett (Milton, MA) drove in the game's first run with a single to left. That was all the Rams' offense could muster off Lebrun the rest of the day, as he settled in getting out of the jam and cruised through the next four.

The Beacons would respond in the top half of the second inning with three runs of their own. Junior designated hitter Dan Noonan (Westport, MA) led the inning off with a single, and came around to score on an RBI single off the bat of Reinfurt. A wild pitch would bring home the second Beacons' run of the day, before senior Drew Tambling (Sterling, MA) made it 3-1 with a sacrifice fly to left.

UMass Boston added another run in the third on a couple of Suffolk defensive miscues and then added two more in the fifth, as junior right fielder Jose Roman Santos (Tenares, DR) and freshman shortstop Matt Consiglio (Southbury, CT) picked up RBI in the inning.

Freshman Matt Sliney (Brockton, MA) pitched well for the Rams in his first collegiate start. Sliney went six-plus innings, allowing the nine hits and five earned runs, but was a victim of some shaky defensive play. Sophomore Brian Svennson (Wilmington, MA) threw the final three innings out of the bullpen, allowing two runs on three hits.

Barrett was the lone Suffolk hitter with multiple hits on the day, as he finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Suffolk only had five hits combined in the game.

The Beacons will be back in action on Wednesday as they take on Babson College in non-league action in Babson Park, MA at 3:30 p.m., while the Rams will travel to Endicott College on Thursday to take on the Gulls.
