BASEBALL NIPPED AT SALEM STATE, 7-6

SALEM, MA -- Troy Ingemi went 2-for-4 with two RBI and picked up the save to lead the Salem State Vikings baseball team to a 7-6 victory over visiting University of Massachusetts Boston on Wednesday afternoon in Salem, MA.

Ingemi scored the first run of the game for Salem State (7-6) in the bottom of the first on a run-scoring single by Evan Valcourt. Devon Davis added a sacrifice fly and the Vikings led 2-0 after one. UMass Boston cut the deficit to 3-1 in the top of the fourth when junior second baseman Ryan Walsh (Newton, MA) scored on an error after reaching base on a single.

The Vikings opened up the lead in the bottom of the fourth with three runs to make the score 6-1. Mike Dedo drove in Davis with the first run of the inning with an RBI single and following a walk to Guery Alonzo, Ingemi doubled home both runners to give Salem State a five-run lead.

The Beacons (9-4) rallied in the sixth and seventh innings, scoring four runs to draw to within 7-5. Junior catcher Tim Fontaine (Worcester, MA) and senior left fielder Drew Tambling (Sterling, MA) hit run scoring singles in the sixth and Walsh and junior first baseman Connor Reinfurt (Manchester, NH) followed with back-to-back RBI doubles in the seventh to reduce the deficit to two runs.

UMass Boston almost tied the game in the eighth inning. Tambling opened with a single, stole second and later scored on an error to make the score 7-6. Junior pinch runner Jose Roman Santos (Tenares, DR) then tried to score on a fly ball to center field, but was gunned down by Joe Galindo at the plate and the Vikings held on for the one-run victory.

Senior left-handed pitcher Mike Adriano (Massapequa, NY) started and took the loss for UMass Boston, lasting four innings and giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits, while striking out four.

Mario Padovanni picked up the victory to improve to 2-1 on the year. Padovanni went six and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on nine hits with six strikeouts. Andrew Rainville pitched one and two thirds innings, relieving Padovanni in the seventh with two runners on and recorded the last out to end the UMass Boston threat.

Ingemi entered in the ninth and earned the save, retiring two batters after relieving Andrew Guido who issued a walk after recording the first out.

Walsh and Tambling each went 3-4 with a run batted in to lead the Beacons. Walsh moved into fifth on the UMass Boston career hits list with 138 and into a tie for sixth with 72 career RBI, while scoring three runs on the day. Tambling stole two bases to move into a tie for eighth on the school's career stolen base list with 29.

Salem State will play at home again tomorrow afternoon against Lasell College, while the Beacons travel to Worcester, MA tomorrow to take on Worcester State College at 3:30 p.m.
