WINTER HAVEN, FL -- Junior Brett Carroll (River Edge, NJ) tossed seven innings of shutout baseball and senior first baseman Marc Palestina (Paramus, NJ) knocked in two runs with a pair of hits, including a double to lead the William Paterson University baseball team over University of Massachusetts Boston, 7-0, at Polk Community College in Winter Haven, FL in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Pioneers improve to 3-1-1 on the season, while the Beacons fall to 0-1 in their season opener.

Back-to-back RBI-singles by junior catcher Zac Rose (Nutley, NJ) and sophomore shortstop Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, NJ) handed the Pioneers a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, and two innings later senior center fielder Andrue Laguerre (Jersey City, NJ) doubled in Dorio and Palestina plated two more with a two-bagger to right-center, making it a 5-0 score for William Paterson.

Senior designated hitter Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, NJ) hit his third home run of the season, this one a solo shot over the fence in left-center in the bottom of the sixth, and senior second baseman Miguel Lugo (Jersey City, NJ) drove in the final run with a seventh-inning single for the Pioneers.

UMass Boston threatened in each of the first two innings, putting a runner in scoring position. Junior second baseman Ryan Walsh (Newton, MA) cracked a booming double to left center field with two outs, but was stranded in the top of the first inning. The Beacons put their leadoff man on to start the second when junior first baseman Connor Reinfurt (Manchester, NH) singled up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore third baseman Mike Mattei (Spencer, MA), but Carroll got out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts.

Carroll improved to 2-0, scattering three hits and four walks while striking out eight hitters for William Paterson. Sophomore Steve Coral (Totowa, NJ) pitched the final two innings and did not allow a hit while registering two strikeouts. Guadango, Palestina, Rose and sophomore right fielder Jack Montanile (Weehawken, NJ) each contributed a pair of hits.

Sophomore center fielder Mark McCormack (Shelton, CT) collected UMass Boston's third and final hit in the third inning when he beat out an infield single to second base. Sophomore southpaw James Dalton (Apopka, FL) suffered the loss in his Beacons' debut, allowing six runs (five earned) in six innings on 10 hits and three walks, while striking out three. Freshman reliever Daniel Heefner (Tracy, CA) threw an inning in relief in the seventh, giving up an unearned run on a hit and a walk to go with a strikeout, while junior relief pitcher Tony Damon (San Bruno, CA) pitched a scoreless eighth inning, fanning three batters, while issuing a walk and hitting a pair of hitters in his first UMass Boston appearance.

The Pioneers will face Babson Sunday, March 14, at 1:00 p.m. at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, while Beacons take on Denison University at 12:30 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, FL.
