KEENE, NH - The Keene State College baseball team erased a 3-0 deficit and scored 12 unanswered runs to defeat visiting University of Massachusetts Boston, 12-5, in a Little East Conference game today at Owl Stadium in Keene, NH. The Beacons fall to 13-17 overall and 5-4 in LEC play, while the Owls improve to 16-12 and 5-6.
Freshman shortstop Kyle Morrill (Auburn, NH) drove in a run with a single to right field in the bottom of the second inning to cut the deficit to 3-1 for Keene State. The Owls pulled to within 3-2 in the third when sophomore left fielder Tyler DiPrato (Suffield, CT) plated a run with a sacrifice fly to right field and sophomore designated hitter Jon Barber (Brattleboro, VT) gave the home team a 4-3 edge with a two-run home run to left field.
Keene State scored three more times in the fourth, keyed by a run-scoring fielder's choice by junior catcher Anthony Cipolla (Glastonbury, CT) and another sacrifice fly from DiPrato. Freshman second baseman Erik Bergstrom (Enfield, CT) doubled home a run and Cipolla brought in another in the fifth for a 9-3 Owls' lead.
Keene State tacked on another run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to cap its scoring for the afternoon. Cipolla knocked in his third run of the day for the Owls with a ground out in the seventh and freshman right fielder Cody Callahan (Seekonk, MA) cracked an RBI double in addition to a run-scoring single from Bergstrom in the eighth to make it 12-3.
UMass Boston senior designated hitter Eric Salvador (Middleboro, MA) crushed a two-run homer to left center to cut the deficit to 12-5, but that would end the scoring.
The Beacons got on the board first with three runs in the second inning when sophomore shortstop Dan Noonan (Westport, MA) smacked a leadoff double down the right field line and junior third baseman Arthur Lauzier (Fall River, MA) followed with a single to left, prior to a bunt single by junior left fielder Drew Tambling (Sterling, MA) to load the bases. Sophomore first baseman Connor Reinfurt (Manchester, NH) came through with an RBI single and freshman right fielder Ty Buccetti (Wallingford, CT) reached on a fielder's choice to give UMB a 2-0 margin. Tambling later scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 Beacons' lead.
Freshman Jeff Pelkey (Fitzwilliam, NH) (3-1) threw seven innings and allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out six to earn the victory for Keene State. Sophomore southpaw Mark Grant (Danbury, CT) (2-2) suffered the loss, yielding seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and three walks, while fanning two batters in three innings for UMass Boston.
Bergstrom went 3-5 with two runs batted in to contribute for the Owls, while Callahan and Morrill each collected three hits and knocked in a run. Lauzier, Tambling, sophomore second baseman Ryan Walsh (Newton, MA) and sophomore catcher Tim Fontaine (Worcester, MA) all registered a pair of hits for the Beacons.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Tuesday, April 21 when it travels to Milton, MA to take on Curry College at 3:30 p.m., while Keene State takes on Wheaton College today at 3:30 p.m.
