SALVADOR, GAMBILL LEAD BASEBALL OVER EASTERN NAZARENE, 11-4

April 16, 2009

Box Score

QUINCY, MA - Senior designated hitter Eric Salvador (Middleboro, MA) collected three hits and knocked in three runs and freshman starting pitcher Dan Gambill (Lake Worth, FL) allowed four unearned runs in eight innings to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston baseball team over Eastern Nazarene College, 11-4, today at Bradley Field in Quincy, MA. The game was played on the Eastern Nazarene campus, but the Beacons were the home team. UMass Boston extended its school-record to eight consecutive games for scoring 10 or more runs and has also done so in 11 of its last 12 contests, while winning seven of its last eight games to improve to 11-15 on the season, while the Crusaders fall to 13-16.

The Beacons erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take an 8-3 lead. Sophomore right fielder Tim Fontaine (Worcester, MA) pulled UMass Boston even with a run-scoring double to left field, before Salvador singled through the left side to give the Beacons their first lead of the afternoon at 4-3. Junior third baseman Arthur Lauzier (Fall River, MA) followed with a two-run double to right center and sophomore first baseman Connor Reinfurt (Manchester, NH) singled to left field to increase UMass Boston's advantage to 7-3. Freshman center fielder Mark McCormack (Shelton, CT) later singled through the right side for his third hit of the day to drive in the Beacons' eighth run. UMass Boston tacked on three more runs in the sixth when Salvador plated two more runs with a single through the right side and later scored on a wild pitch to give UMB an 11-3 margin. Eastern Nazarene got a run back in the seventh when sophomore center fielder Victor Torres (Bronx, NY) ripped a one-out single off the pitcher's glove and into center field, then stole second and third base and scored on a throwing error on the theft of third to cut the deficit to 11-4, but it would cap the scoring on the day for both teams.

The Crusaders took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Torres reached on an error, stole second and later scored on a fielder's choice on a ground ball to short off the bat of freshman Jeffrey Hostos (Bronx, NY) and sophomore Stephen Oehlschlaeger (Dallas, TX) followed with an RBI single to center field. The Beacons cut the margin in half in the bottom of the inning when McCormack led off with a double to left field, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a Fontaine ground out to second base. UMass Boston knotted the score at 2-2 in the third when senior catcher Charlie Peters (Burbank, CA) drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a McCormack single, stole third on the front end of a double steal and scampered home on a sacrifice fly to right field from sophomore second baseman Ryan Walsh (Newton, MA), who was unable to reach base on the day, via a hit, walk or hit-by-pitch, thus ending his consecutive game streak at 46 straight. Eastern Nazarene reclaimed the lead in the fourth when Oehlschlager worked a one-out walk, senior Sam Mohnkem (Petersburg, PA) singled down the left field line and freshman George Williams (Thornwood, NY) reached on a fielder's choice that incurred a throwing error to score the go-ahead run to make it 3-2 in favor of ENC.

Gambill finished the day, allowing just five hits to go with six walks and four strikeouts to improve to 3-1 on the season for the Beacons, while freshman Matthew Young (Colchester, CT) threw a scoreless inning of relief with a strikeout to close out the game. Sophomore southpaw Justin Denbow (Readfield, ME) (1-2) suffered the loss for the Crusaders, yielding 10 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits and three walks, while fanning four batters. McCormack finished the day going 3-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and three stolen bases as part of a school-record 12 theft afternoon for UMB as a team, while Lauzier and Fontaine each went 2-5 with a double and two runs batted in and sophomore shortstop Dan Noonan (Westport, MA) was plunked by a pitch for the second time in the game in the eighth inning to tie the single-season school record set by Joe Barresi in 1998. Mohnkem led Eastern Nazarene with a pair of hits, while Oehlschlaeger was 1-3 with an RBI and sophomore shortstop David Rivera (Pelham, NH) was 1-2. Torres stole a game-high four bases as well.

UMass Boston will be in action again tomorrow when it hosts Keene State College in a Little East Conference game at Yetten Field in Waltham, MA at 3:30 p.m., while the Crusaders host New England College for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 18 at 10:00 a.m.
