BABSON PARK, MA - Visiting University of Massachusetts Boston erupted for nine runs in the first three innings en route to an 11-2 victory over host Babson College in a non-conference baseball game at Govoni Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Beacons extend their school-record to seven consecutive games with 10 or more runs scored and improve to 10-15 overall, while the Beavers slipped to 14-14.
Pacing UMass Boston's 19-hit attack were sophomores Ryan Walsh (Newton, MA) and Dan Noonan (Westport, MA), who recorded three hits apiece. Five other players posted two hits each for the Beacons, including junior Arthur Lauzier (Fall River, MA) and first-year Ty Buccetti (Wallingford, CT), who also drove in two runs apiece.
Sophomore Mark Grant (Danbury, CT) started and went four innings to earn the win for UMass Boston, giving up just one unearned run on five hits, walking none and striking out a pair. The victory improved his record to 2-1. Junior Alex Simas (Wareham, MA) added four innings of relief, allowing only one run on two hits, while sophomore Ryan Murphy (Pembroke, MA) finished up with a scoreless ninth.
Sophomore Billy Besinger (Milton, MA) led the Babson offense out of the leadoff spot, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. First-year Mike Martinez (Miami, FL) added his first collegiate hit and RBI for the Beavers, while first-year Billy Miller (Sagamore Beach, MA) and junior Jake Bartlett (Weymouth, MA) each scored a run in defeat. Sophomore Jeff Browne (Vorhees, NJ) started and took the loss, evening his record at 1-1, while senior Pete Bizinkauskas (Duxbury, MA) pitched five innings of relief, allowing three earned runs and striking out three.
The Beacons will be in action again on Thursday, April 16 when they travel to Quincy, MA to play Eastern Nazarene College on its campus, but UMB will be the home team. Babson will also play tomorrow, hosting Wentworth Institute of Technology at 3:30 p.m.
