April 10, 2009

Box Score

WALTHAM, MA - The University of Massachusetts Boston baseball team came around home five times in the first inning to seal the Lasell College fate, as it tore its way to a 17-3 advantage. The Beacons' bats were led by freshman center fielder Mark McCormack (Shelton, CT) who went 5 for 6 hitting, with two runs batted in and a school-record tying five runs. UMass Boston put up a double-digit run total for the fourth straight game, all victories, to improve to 8-14 on the season, while the Lasers fall to 6-16.

McCormack put the Beacons ahead first singling to right field then being batted in by sophomore second baseman Ryan Walsh (Newton, MA) to score the go-ahead run. UMass then score four more times on four hits, including a two-run double off the bat of freshman right fielder Ty Buccetti (Wallingford, CT) to take a 5-0 lead after just a half an inning.

The Lasers deficit continued to grow through the next five innings as they went scoreless through the sixth.

Lasell's Sean Ruderman (Pittsfield, MA) gave the Lasers their first score of the game after walking, then advancing on a Mike Grenier (Fitchburg, MA) base hit. Pat Girard (Stonington, CT) grounded out in the next play, however Ruderman advanced to scoring position on the throw, and was knocked in by Junior Veija (Randolph, MA), who singled through the left side.

The Lasers scored two more runs in the following innings, with Mike Mahoney (Rockland, MA) sending a sacrifice fly to score Matt Mahoney (Rockland, MA). In the ninth, Matt Mahoney's double to right center sent Grenier home unearned for their final tally.

Walsh and Buccetti each had three hits and two runs for the Beacons, combining for five RBIs, while freshman first baseman Pat Lynch (Middletown, RI) came off the bench to collect his first two collegiate hits in as many at-bats, including a run-scoring double for his first base knock.

Freshman starting pitcher Dan Gambill (Lake Worth, FL) (2-1) earned the win on the mound for the Beacons, pitching seven innings, giving up just three hits, one run, all the while striking out six Lasers.

Lasell hits the road to face Albertus Magnus College in a doubleheader on Friday, April 10th, beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Lasers then continue GNAC play on Saturday, with another two-game series against Rivier College at home. First pitch will be thrown at noon.
