BASEBALL FALLS AT SALEM STATE COLLEGE, 15-4

April 1, 2009

Box Score

SALEM, MA -- The Salem State College baseball team pounded out 13 hits and scored 15 runs for the second straight day en route to defeating the University of Massachusetts at Boston, 15-4, in a non-conference game played this afternoon at The Salem State College Baseball Diamond.

Not only did the Vikings hit well, they also pitched well. Sophomore righty Jeff Borges (Westport, MA) held the Beacons (4-13) hit-less until a one-out triple by freshman Mark McCormack (Shelton, CT) in the sixth inning. Borges would record the victory, going seven innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out nine and walking a pair. SSC junior lefty Mike Voyer (Plymouth, MA), who threw the final two frames, gave up one run, allowed five hits and struck out two.

The SSC offense, fresh off helping SSC head coach Ken Pewrrone acheive his 600th career win the day before in a 15-0 decision over Clark University, exploded for three four-run innings against UMB. Junior Steve Mucci (Walkill, NY) and sophomore Evan Valcourt (Salisbury, MA) each collected four RBIs for the Vikings. Senior Ben Garlington (Rochester, MA) knocked in three runs to contribute for Salem State as well, while freshman Chris Cocci (Wakefield, RI) and sophomore Ryan Kane (Nahant, MA) added two RBIs each for the winners.

Cocci and Kane each went 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Mucci went 3-for-3 and scored twice. Garlington had a two-run single and senior Nick Dunn (Mashpee, MA) reached base four times, stealing three bases and scoring three runs.

The Beacons received a two-run double from sophomore second baseman Ryan Walsh (Newton, MA) and a pair of RBI singles from junior left fielder Drew Tabling (Sterling, MA). Sophomore catcher Tim Fontaine (Worcester, MA) also had two singles and scored once for UMB.

The Vikings' next game will be Thursday, April 2 when the Vikings host Lasell College at 3:00 p.m., while UMass Boston will play Worcester State College tomorrow in Worcester, MA at 3:30 p.m.
