Box Score
WINTER HAVEN, FL - Chris Jarrett went 4-5 with a pair of home runs and five runs batted in to lead the Anderson University baseball team over University of Massachusetts Boston, 11-4, today at Chain O' Lakes Park in Winter Haven, FL in the RussMatt Invitational. The Beacons fall to 0-5 on the season, while the Ravens improve to 2-4.
Brad Schnepp cracked a one-out double to right field and David Addington reached on an infield single and Jarrett later crushed the first pitch he saw over the right center field fence to give Anderson a 4-0 lead. UMass Boston got on the board when sophomore shortstop Jose Santos (Boston, MA/Madison Park) skied a one-out fly ball to right field and ended up on third with a triple to set up a sacrifice fly to right field by freshman center fielder Mark McCormack (Shelton, CT) to bring home the Beacons' first run.
Schnepp and Addington collected back-to-back singles to begin the top of the fourth inning and Brady Roundtree was hit by a pitch to load the bases without an out and Jarrett singled to left to knock in another run for a 5-1 Ravens' lead. Jeremy Hazen singled up the middle to bring home two more runs and Anderson tacked on a couple more runs on ground outs to give it a 9-1 advantage. The Ravens added a run in the seventh on an error and Jarrett sent another rocket to right center for his second homer of the contest to give them an 11-1 cushion.
Sophomore third baseman Dan Noonan (Westport, MA) cracked a two-run double to right center in the bottom of the eighth and freshman left fielder Russell Sirko (Danbury, CT) later plated freshman freshman pinch runner Dan Magovney (Watertown, NY) with UMass Boston's fourth run to cut the deficit to 11-4, but it wouldn't be enough.
Anderson scored the first run of the game on a Brad Lantz sacrifice fly to right field in the first inning.
Shane Nevers picked up the win for the Ravens allowing just one run on seven hits and no walks, while striking out two and freshman Dan Gambill (Lake Worth, FL) took the loss for the Beacons, yielding nine runs on 11 hits in three and a third innings of work. Freshman reliever Matthew Young (Colchester, CT) closed out the game for UMB with a pair of scoreless frames and allowed just two hits in addition to fanning a pair of batters.
Jarrett also added a double to his outing to fall just a triple short of hitting for the cycle, while Hazen, Lantz, Daniel Hiatt and Cody Young all registered two hits and knocked in at least one run for Anderson. McCormack and Noonan each collected a pair of hits and drove in at least one run to lead the Beacons.
UMass Boston will face Endicott College tomorrow at Chain O' Lakes Park at 9:00 a.m., while the Ravens play a double header with Hope College in Winter Haven at 9:00 a.m.
