GORHAM, Maine -- UMass Boston women's lacrosse (6-10, 4-3 Little East Conference) fell to Southern Maine (12-4, 6-1 LEC) 15-4 in a Little East Conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon. Despite the lopsided score, first-year goalie Anette Bennett-Tucker (New Bedford, Mass.) recorded 10 saves in net for the Beacons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Southern Maine established control immediately, scoring five unanswered goals to open the contest. Elaina Hanselmann got the Huskies on the board first off an assist from Cierra Hill, and Mariam DeLisle followed with two more goals before Anna Byers and Katelyn D'Appolonia extended the advantage to 5-0. Emily Pearl (Orleans, Mass.) put UMass Boston on the board with just over seven minutes remaining in the first quarter, converting on an assist from Jamie McAleavey (Quincy, Mass.), but Southern Maine answered with two more goals — including another from D'Appolonia — to lead 7-1 after the opening period.
The Huskies continued to pour it on in the second quarter, scoring four more times to push their lead to 11-1. Pearl provided a bright spot for the Beacons late in the half, scoring unassisted to cut the deficit to 11-2 at the break.
UMass Boston showed more life in the third quarter, with Kaitlyn Ondrick (Westfield, Mass.) converting a free-position goal to make it 12-3 before D'Appolonia answered for Southern Maine. Ondrick added another free-position strike — this one a player-up conversion after back-to-back Southern Maine cards on Hill and Byers — early in the fourth quarter to pull UMass Boston within 13-4, but the Huskies closed out the game with two more goals from Byers, the second assisted by DeLisle, to set the final score.
