NEWTON, Mass. -- UMass Boston women's lacrosse (6-9, 4-2 Little East Conference) fell to Western Connecticut State (12-3, 7-0 LEC) 20-6 in a Little East Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. Despite the lopsided score, first-year goalie Anette Bennett-Tucker (New Bedford, Mass.) recorded 10 saves in net for UMass Boston.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Western Connecticut State established control early, scoring the first four goals of the contest. Morgan Holohan (Averill Park, NY) put the Beacons on the board with a player-up, free-position goal midway through the first quarter. Ava Duffy (Boston, Mass.) added another tally off an assist from Rae Alexander (Georgia, Vt.), but the Wolves held a 7-2 lead after the first 15 minutes.
WestConn's offense continued to click in the second quarter, posting eight more goals to extend their advantage. Teresa Sheedy (Quincy, Mass.) and Alexander scored for UMass Boston, but the Beacons trailed 15-4 at halftime.
UMass Boston produced its strongest defensive effort in the third quarter, holding Western Connecticut scoreless for the entire period. Holohan scored the quarter's only goal, converting on a pass from Aoife Queally (Abington, Mass.). In the final frame, Angelina Mazzone (Beverly, Mass.) found the back of the net for the Beacons' final goal of the day.
BY THE NUMBERS
Statistically, Western Connecticut controlled possession, outshooting the Beacons 36-14 and holding an 18-6 advantage in ground balls. The turnover margin proved critical, as UMass Boston committed 19 turnovers compared to just seven for the visitors. Western Connecticut converted all 18 of its clear attempts, while the Beacons went 13-for-19.
Holohan led the UMass Boston offense with two goals, both coming in player-up situations. Alexander finished with two points on one goal and one assist. Mazzone was active on the draw, securing five draw controls, while Bennett-Tucker made 10 stops in goal.

The Beacons will look to bounce back on the road when they travel to Gorham, Maine, for a conference game against the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday, April 22, at 4 p.m.
