Beacons Drop Pair of Tough Games to Close Florida Trip

Melbourne, Fla. (March 19, 2026) – UMass Boston softball concluded its play at the Space Coast Spring Break tournament with a pair of losses on Thursday, falling 5-3 to Central College before dropping a 9-7 decision to Hamilton College.

How It Happened

In the day's opener, Central College jumped out to a 4-0 lead through three innings. The Beacons' offense came alive in the bottom of the fourth. Ella Delisle (Amesbury, Mass.) and  Avery Weinstein (Winnetka, Ill.) reached base, freshman Liv Wentworth (Fitchburg, Mass.) drove them both in with a double to left center. Senior Sofie Richland (Burlington, Vt.) followed with an RBI double of her own, cutting the deficit to 4-3. Central added an insurance run in the sixth, as the Beacons were unable to complete the comeback in the 5-3 loss.

The second game against Hamilton featured major momentum swings. Hamilton built an early 3-0 lead, which held until the top of the fifth. UMass Boston then exploded for six runs to seize the lead. An error allowed the first run to score before Mary Matthews (Wilsonville, Ore.) cleared the bases with a two-run triple to tie the game. Hayley Krockta (Taunton, Mass.) immediately followed with a two-run double, and Mya Perron (Beverly, Mass.) capped the rally with an RBI single, putting the Beacons ahead 6-3. However, Hamilton answered with a six-run bottom of the sixth, capitalizing on multiple hits, defensive miscues and passed balls to reclaim the lead at 9-6. Perron drove in another run in the seventh, but the rally fell short.

By the Numbers

  • Richland was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI in the first game against Central.
  • The Beacons collected 16 hits across the two games, including three doubles and a triple.
  • Perron, Krockta and Matthews each drove in two runs in the game against Hamilton.
  • Both teams posted a six-run inning in the back-and-forth second contest.
