UMass Boston Celebrates New Softball Complex at Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Newly constructed facility marks a significant investment in Beacon softball, women's athletics, and the student-athlete experience.

BOSTON, Mass. (October 24, 2026) — The University of Massachusetts Boston community celebrated the ribbon-cutting of its new softball complex on Saturday, October 24. University leadership, current and former student-athletes, alumni, families, and friends gathered to commemorate the occasion and celebrate the future of Beacons softball.

The newly constructed complex features field lighting, a new scoreboard, a press box, and beautifully landscaped surroundings designed to complement the university's campus. Together, these enhancements create a welcoming home venue for Beacon softball and a gathering place for generations of student-athletes, alumni, and fans.

During the ceremony, Chancellor Marcelo Suárez-Orozco emphasized the significance of the new complex and the university's commitment to providing female student-athletes with high-quality facilities to compete at the highest level of NCAA Division III and the Little East Conference.

The Chancellor also highlighted the important role athletics plays in the UMass Boston experience, noting that student-athletes balance rigorous academic demands with the dedication required for collegiate competition. The new complex provides a home venue that reflects their commitment while fostering the camaraderie, school spirit, and pride that make collegiate athletics such a meaningful part of campus life.

Remarks were also delivered by Dr. Jacqueline Schuman, Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics & Recreation; Natalia Ardagna, head softball coach; and Kathleen Kirleis, Vice Chancellor of Administration and Finance.

The celebration began with an alumni game, welcoming former Beacon softball players back to the field to reconnect with teammates and celebrate the program's legacy. The gathering recognized the contributions of generations of softball alumnae whose dedication helped pave the way for this milestone and reinforced the lasting connections that unite the Beacons community.

Beyond its impact on the softball program, the complex will serve as a focal point for bringing together current student-athletes, alumni, families, and fans. The facility also creates opportunities for expanded community engagement through youth programs, local athletic partnerships, and connections with Dorchester and Greater Boston.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked more than the opening of a new athletic facility. It celebrated an investment in women's athletics, the student-athlete experience, and the future of Beacon softball. With enhanced amenities and landscaping that integrates the complex into the campus environment, UMass Boston has created a space that honors the program's history while providing a foundation for future generations of Beacons.
