Matier, Beacons’ Defense Shine in Under-the-Lights Stalemate with Wellesley

BOSTON, MA (September 10, 2025) – Behind a fearless back line and another standout performance from first-year goalkeeper Janiya Matier (North Easton, Mass.), UMass Boston women's soccer (3-0-1) battled Wellesley College (2-1-1) to a hard-fought 0-0 draw Wednesday night under the James Cotter Stadium lights. The result marked Matier's second straight shutout and the third of her young collegiate career.

The Beacons came out firing, as Cloe Kapetanakos (Weymouth, Mass.) registered the game's first strike less than a minute into play. Wellesley answered in the 11th minute with a dangerous chance that clipped the post before Matier came up with her first save of the evening to deny the Blues' opening shot on goal.

Moments later, UMass Boston star forward Sofia Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) began a relentless offensive display, unleashing six total shots over the initial 45 minutes. One of the six shots included a penalty kick, but the Wellesley defense and keeper Riley McNair turned away each attempt. The Beacons' back line held firm on the other end, limiting the Blues to just four first-half attempts as both teams went into the break with a corner apiece.

UMass Boston amplified the pressure in the second half, outshooting Wellesley 15-4. Schallmo added seven more efforts, two of which forced difficult saves, but McNair rose to the occasion to preserve the stalemate.

Matier finished with two crucial stops to record the shutout, while Schallmo led the attack with support from Kapetanakos and Amanda Regan (Pepperell, Mass.), who each registered two shots, and first-year Lorelai Leddy (West Greenwich, R.I.), who tallied three. Bella Luca (Cumberland, R.I.) joined Schallmo as the only Beacons to log all 90 minutes among the 20 players who saw action.

UMass Boston returns to action on Saturday, September 13, traveling to Lewiston, Maine, to take on the Bates College Bobcats at 2:00 p.m.
