LEWISTON, ME (September 13, 2025) – UMass Boston women's soccer (3-1-1) dropped its first game of the season Saturday, falling on the road to a strong Bates College (3-1) squad. The Beacons battled throughout, led by nine combined shots from sophomores Sofia Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) and Daniella Celotto (Prospect, Conn.) and six saves from first-year goalkeeper Janiya Matier (North Easton, Mass.).
The Bobcats opened the scoring early, capitalizing on a rebound after an initial Matier save. Moments later, junior midfielder Amanda Regan (Pepperell, Mass.) forced Bates keeper Sidney Litney into her first stop of the day. Celotto challenged Litney three times in the first half, while the Beacons also generated three corner opportunities.
Just 54 seconds into the second half, Bates doubled its lead. UMass Boston continued to press, with Celotto and Regan each testing Litney again, while Schallmo created late chances from the corner flag that were ultimately blocked away.
Bates outshot the Beacons 10-6 in the opening half, but UMass Boston answered with a nearly even 9-7 margin in the second. Both teams finished with six saves, while the Beacons held a 6-4 edge in corners. The match featured 12 fouls per side, with the lone booking shown to Bates' Rachel Suh.
Schallmo, Celotto, and Cloe Kapetanakos (Weymouth, Mass.) logged heavy minutes to lead the Beacons, with 24 players seeing action against the experienced NESCAC foe.
UMass Boston now turns its attention to Wednesday, September 17, when the Beacons travel to Milton, Mass., for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference clash with Curry College.
