How It Happened
The Beacons struck first as Matt Hutchings (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) scored just over three minutes into the game, assisted by Jack Schartner (Bolton, Mass.). Massachusetts Maritime's James Sullivan quickly leveled the score 20 seconds later. However, Sean Daly (Kingston, Mass.) gave UMass Boston a 2-1 lead with his third goal of the season, a lead the Beacons would never relinquish. Daly then assisted Hutchings on his second goal of the game, and Schartner tallied his first of seven goals on the day, assisted by Duncan Youngclaus (Middleboro, Mass.). Hutchings completed his first-quarter hat trick, his fifth of the season, pushing the Beacons to a 5-2 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Both goalkeepers were solid in the second quarter, with James Boldy (Hopedale, Mass.) making two saves for the Beacons and Massachusetts Maritime's Eddie Keller stopping seven shots, keeping the score unchanged.
Schartner and Daniel Kane traded man-up goals to open the third quarter. At 5:49, Schartner completed his hat trick, sparking an eight-goal run for the Beacons. Timothy Sullivan (Walpole, Mass.) made it 8-3 before Schartner netted his fourth of the game, assisted by Tyler Hilgert (Guilford, CT.). Dale Wills (Summit, N.J.) got in on the action with his first of two goals, and Schartner scored twice more to end the third quarter with UMass Boston leading 12-3.
Timothy Sullivan opened the fourth quarter with his second goal just 21 seconds into play, and Shane McGonagle (Haverhill, Mass.) added another for the Beacons 17 seconds later to make it 14-3. Wills scored his second goal, sandwiched between two goals by Quinn Mucha of Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Schartner closed out the scoring for the home team with his career-high seventh goal of the game, sealing the 16-7 victory.
