FAIRFIELD, CONN. (April 13, 2025) – The UMass Boston softball team (21-2-1, 4-1-1 Little East Conference) dropped just their second game of the season in a tightly contested opener against Western Connecticut State (15-11, 3-3 LEC), despite out-hitting the Wolves 6–5. The Beacons bounced back in dominant fashion, securing a 12–3 run-rule victory in five innings in game two to improve to 4-1-1 in the LEC this season.
Game One: UMass Boston 1 – WestConn 2

Jacqueline Cherry (Franklin, Mass.) pitched six strong innings, allowing five hits and striking out five across 27 batters faced.

Both teams scored once in the opening frame. The Beacons struck first with an RBI double from Bri Melchionda (Marshfield, Mass.) to bring home Sofie Richland (South Burlington, Vt.).

WestConn evened the score with an RBI single in the bottom of the first.

UMass Boston tallied five more hits over the next five innings but couldn't bring another run across. The Wolves ultimately plated the game-winner on an RBI fielder's choice in the sixth.

Five Beacons recorded hits, led by Richland who went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Melchionda finished 1-for-2 with the lone RBI.
Game Two: UMass Boston 12 – WestConn 3 (Five Innings)

UMass Boston made quick work of the Wolves in game two, enacting the run rule with a 12–3 victory in five innings. Izzy Levasseur (Amesbury, Mass.) earned her fourth win of the season, tossing all five innings and allowing just three hits to 20 batters faced.

The Beacons opened with a three-run first, featuring RBI singles from Haley Tilberry (Moosic, Pa.) and Ella Delisle (Amesbury, Mass.).

They tacked on four more in the second, including an RBI single from Richland and a bases-clearing double from Hayley Krockta (Taunton, Mass.), stretching the lead to 7–0.

In the third, UMass Boston added three more, highlighted by an RBI single from Amauri English (North Providence, R.I.).

Krockta capped the scoring with a solo home run in the fifth, her fourth RBI of the game.

The Beacons batted .500 in game two, recording 15 hits in 30 at-bats. Krockta and Mary Matthews (Wilsonville, Ore.) led the team with three hits apiece. Matthews reached base in all three of her plate appearances, while Krockta's two doubles and home run gave her a team-high four RBIs.

Richland finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Lauren Miner (Millbury, Mass.) was also 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Matthews tied a 22-year-old program record with four stolen bases in a single game, the second most in a single game in program history. Richland followed with two steals of her own.

Matthews led the defense with four putouts in left field. Richland, Krockta, and English each contributed one of the team's three total assists.

The Beacons return home for their Mental Health Awareness Game on Tuesday, April 15, hosting Vermont State University Castleton at the UMB Softball Field. First pitch for game one is set for 3:00 p.m., with game two to follow at approximately 5:00 p.m.
