Plymouth, NH (March 28, 2025) — The UMass Boston Beacons overcame an early deficit, rallying behind Shane McGonagle's (Haverhill, Mass.) three goals in the third quarter to secure a 13-7 win over LEC opponent Plymouth State on Friday afternoon.
How It Happened
The game began as a low-scoring contest, with Jack Schartner (Bolton, Mass.) accounting for the Beacons' only goal in the first quarter. Plymouth State quickly seized control in the second, scoring two goals in under a minute. Patrick Carey (North Andover, Mass.) responded for the Beacons, pulling them to within one with his sixth goal of the season.
The teams traded goals throughout the second frame, with Ryan Jones converting a man-up opportunity for Plymouth before Matt Hutchings (Mount Kisco, N.Y.), assisted by Nolen Beauregard (Walpole, Mass.), scored his 20th goal of the season. The Panthers' Aiden O'Loughlin extended the lead to 5-3. However, the Beacons responded, with Seth Libby (Pomfret, CT.) scoring their fourth goal and Schartner leveling the score at 5-5. Plymouth State regained the lead with a goal from Ryan Collins, ending the half with the Panthers ahead 6-5.
The second half saw the Beacons take control, led by McGonagle's hat trick. At 11:19 in the third quarter, McGonagle tied the game at 6, then put the Beacons ahead with two more goals, extending the lead to 8-6 with just over five minutes remaining in the frame. Sean Daly (Kingston, Mass.) added to the momentum, scoring his first goal of the season, and Hutchings netted his second goal with just one second left in the third quarter.
In the fourth, Libby scored his second of the afternoon, followed by Daly's second, assisted by Schartner. Plymouth State managed to add one more goal, but UMass Boston sealed the win with Tyler Hilgert's (Guilford, CT.) goal, his sixth of the season, to make it 13-7.
