Beacons Drop Close Contest to Vikings

Boston, MA (Mar. 25, 2025) — The UMass Boston women's lacrosse team held the lead early but fell short, losing to Salem State 11-8. 


How it Happened 

The game was a back-and-forth battle throughout. The Vikings struck first at 11:30 in the opening quarter with a goal from Siobhan Smith. The Beacons quickly responded, with Angelina Mazzone (Beverly, Mass.) and Hannah Rich (Rockland, Mass.) each scoring to give UMass Boston a 2-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. 

In the second quarter, Salem State capitalized on a woman-up opportunity to tie the game at 2-2. However, Ava Duffy (Quincy, Mass.) answered with two consecutive goals, giving the Beacons a 4-2 lead. Salem State responded with two goals of their own before halftime, leveling the score at 4-4. 

UMass Boston came out strong in the third quarter, scoring three unanswered goals. Rae Alexander (Georgia, VT.) netted her 10th goal of the season, followed by Teresa Sheedy's (Quincy, Mass.) first of two goals on the day. Hannah Rich then added her second goal of the game, bringing her season total to 27, to give the Beacons a 7-4 lead. 

However, the Vikings rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Beacons 6-1 to secure an 11-8 victory. 


Inside the Box Score 

  • Hannah Rich led the Beacons with four points, contributing two goals and two assists. 

  • Ava Duffy recorded two goals and one assist, bringing her season total to 23 points. 

  • Jamie McAleavey (Quincy, Mass.) had an impressive performance, collecting a career-high eight ground balls along with two caused turnovers. 

  • The Beacons outshot the Vikings 30-16 overall, with a 17-9 advantage in shots on goal. 

  • UMass Boston forced Salem State into 21 turnovers and successfully cleared 20 of 21 attempts.

The Beacons will return to action on Saturday, March 29th, hosting LEC opponent University of Southern Maine at 12 p.m.
