Beacons Fall to Gophers in First Game of Spring Break Trip

Baltimore, MD (March 19, 2025) — The UMass Boston Beacons women's lacrosse team suffered a narrow 14-11 loss to Goucher College on Wednesday afternoon.

How It Happened

The game began as a defensive battle, with the Beacons trailing 2-1 at the end of the first quarter. Rae Alexander (Georgia, VT), assisted by Ava Duffy (Quincy, Mass.), scored the Beacons' first goal.

Hannah Rich (Rockland, Mass.) opened the second quarter with her first of three goals on a woman-up opportunity. Teresa Sheedy (Quincy, Mass.) then gave UMass Boston its first lead of the game, also on a woman-up play. However, the Gophers responded with two quick goals to regain the lead, 4-3. The back-and-forth battle continued, with Rich scoring again at 5:14. Jamie McAleavey (Quincy, Mass.) and Angelina Mazzone (Beverly, Mass.) added goals in the final minute of the half to give the Beacons a 6-5 lead at halftime.

Goucher came out strong in the third quarter, scoring the first goal of the period. Emily Pearl (Orleans, Mass.) put the Beacons back on top, followed by McAleavey, who scored her second goal of the day to double the lead. The Gophers, however, went on a four-goal run to regain control. With just 14 seconds left in the third quarter, McAleavey completed her hat trick to make it 9-8.

Down 10-9 entering the fourth quarter, Rich completed her own hat trick with her 21st goal of the season to tie the game at 10. Unfortunately, the Beacons were outscored 4-1 in the final 12:42, ultimately falling 14-11.
